πŸ¦‹ A beautiful Brisbane butterfly β€” the Fuscous Swallowtail 🌿

Have you ever spotted one of these graceful butterflies fluttering through your garden?

The Fuscous Swallowtail is a stunning native butterfly found across parts of eastern Australia, including Brisbane. With its dark wings, delicate markings, and elegant flight, it is a wonderful reminder of the incredible wildlife that can visit even our own backyards.

Like many butterflies, they rely on suitable native plants for survival β€” not only for nectar as adults, but also as food plants for their caterpillars.

By planting a diverse range of plants and avoiding unnecessary pesticide use, we can help create gardens that support butterflies, birds, and other native wildlife. 🌺

Keep an eye out next time you’re outside β€” you never know what beautiful visitor might stop by!

🌺 Native Pink Hibiscus: Shelter and Colour for Wildlife 🌺
The Native Pink Hibiscus (Hibiscus splendens) brings bold colour while quietly supporting wildlife.
Its large flowers attract bees and insects, while the plant’s thick, shrubby structure provides excellent cover for small birds and reptiles.
This combination of food and shelter makes it especially valuable in coastal and open environments, where protection can be limited.
🌿 Beauty that protects.

Species of the Week – Ulysses Butterfly (Papilio ulysses) πŸ¦‹

Pretty sure this stunner was the real-life muse for the πŸ¦‹ emoji!

Meet the Ulysses Butterfly (Papilio ulysses), also known as the Blue Mountain Swallowtail.

Native to Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, this rainforest beauty boasts a massive wingspan of up to 14 cm.

Their striking blue colour is thanks to microscopic wing scales that create an effect known as structural colouration.

The underside of its wings is a dull, muted brown but the moment it folds its wings, it completely disappears into the foliage like a dead leaf πŸ‚

"What I find remarkable about this species is how it manages to be both conspicuous and invisible; that flash of electric blue attracts mates in the forest canopy, but the moment it lands and folds its wings, it vanishes completely to hide from predators".

- Giovanni Ramon Cabrera, Collection Manager, Entomology at the Australian Museum

🦜 A friendly visitor with a colourful personality! πŸ’šπŸ’™

There is never a dull moment when a King Parrot decides to drop by!

These stunning native parrots are a beautiful sight around Brisbane and southeast Queensland, with their vibrant colours and gentle nature making them a favourite among bird lovers.

King Parrots are often seen visiting gardens, balconies, and outdoor areas in search of food, water, or simply a safe place to perch and observe the world around them.

If you’re lucky enough to have one visit, enjoy the moment and remember that offering natural food sources through native plants is the best way to support our local birds.

A balcony visit from a King Parrot is certainly a special wildlife encounter! 🌿

πŸ¦œπŸ’¨ A kookaburra in a hurry!

We often think of kookaburras sitting quietly on a branch, watching the world go by β€” but they can be surprisingly quick when they need to be!

These iconic Australian birds are skilled hunters, using their sharp eyesight to spot prey before swooping down with impressive speed and accuracy. Their diet includes insects, reptiles, frogs, and even small animals.

That famous laugh may make them seem relaxed, but behind those cheeky calls is a clever and capable predator perfectly adapted to life in the Australian bush. 🌿

Have you ever watched a kookaburra make a lightning-fast dive?
