DOCTORS ON ALERT AFTER SPIKE IN NEW RODENT-BORNE VIRUS CASES
A virus previously unknown in Australia has doctors on alert after a spike in local cases.
Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis is a rodent-borne virus that has made its way into the Darling Downs region in Queensland on the back of a recent mouse plague.
Symptoms can include severe headaches and, in severe cases, meningitis - an inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.
Doctors say human infections are usually caused by exposure to an infected animal through the unintentional ingestion or inhalation of its urine, droppings, saliva, and nesting materials.
