Silverfish are one of the most overlooked pests in South East Queensland homes. They're small, fast, largely nocturnal and cause no immediate alarm when spotted. The damage they do, however, is cumulative and often irreversible by the time most people take action.

A few things worth knowing about what's actually sharing your home:
🪲 They eat things you can't replace. Silverfish feed on carbohydrates, specifically starches and sugars found in paper, cardboard, book bindings, wallpaper paste, cotton, linen and the glue in photo albums and documents. Old photographs, books, certificates and stored paperwork are all at risk. Unlike rodent damage, silverfish damage tends to go unnoticed until something is retrieved from storage and found to be ruined.

🪲 Queensland's climate is ideal for them. Silverfish thrive in warm, humid conditions with temperatures between 21 and 30 degrees. South East Queensland's subtropical climate means they are active and breeding year-round, rather than slowing down in cooler months the way they do in southern states.

🪲 They are a moisture indicator. A significant silverfish population often points to underlying moisture issues, leaking pipes, condensation in wall cavities, poor subfloor ventilation or roof space humidity. Treating the silverfish without addressing the moisture source means the problem returns.

🪲 They are extremely fast breeders in the right conditions. A female can lay up to 20 eggs per day and silverfish can live for up to three years, meaning a small population becomes a large one quickly in a warm Queensland home.

🪲 They are almost never alone. Silverfish populations attract spiders, particularly daddy long legs and huntsmen, which prey on them. A home with a notable spider presence and no obvious reason for it is sometimes traceable back to a silverfish infestation providing the food source.

DIY treatments manage surface populations but rarely address the harbourage areas where silverfish breed, typically in roof voids, wall cavities, subfloor spaces and inside stored cardboard boxes.

Most Queensland homeowners know termite barriers exist. Far fewer know what type their property has, when it was installed or whether it is still providing any meaningful protection.

Here's a plain-English breakdown:
🐜 Chemical barriers are the most common type in existing homes. A termiticide is applied to the soil around and beneath the structure, creating a treated zone termites cannot cross without being affected. These are not permanent. Most chemical barriers have an effective lifespan of 8 to 10 years depending on the product, soil conditions and whether the treated zone has been disturbed by landscaping, excavation or construction work.

🐜 Physical barriers are installed during construction, typically under the slab and around penetrations. They are designed to force termites into the open where they can be detected during an inspection. Physical barriers do not kill termites but they do make infestations significantly easier to find early.

🐜 Baiting systems use monitoring stations placed around the property. When termite activity is detected, a slow-acting bait is introduced that the colony carries back and shares. Effective but requires regular monitoring to work properly.

The critical point: a barrier that was installed 12 years ago and never inspected is not protecting your home. It may have degraded, been breached or simply expired.

Annual termite inspections exist partly to assess whether your existing protection is still doing its job.

South East Queensland has one of the highest rates of residential solar uptake in the world. What most homeowners don't realise is that the gap between a solar panel and the roof beneath it is close to ideal nesting territory for several of the region's most problematic pests.

Most people treat ants as a single pest. In South East Queensland, that's a mistake. The species you're dealing with determines how serious the problem is, where the colony is likely to be, and what treatment will actually work.

A quick guide to the ants most commonly found around Brisbane and Gold Coast homes:

🐜 Coastal brown ant (Pheidole megacephala): The most common household ant in SEQ. Nests in soil, under pavers and in wall cavities. Notorious for relocating when disturbed, which is why DIY baits and sprays often scatter the colony rather than eliminate it.
🐜 Black house ant (Ochetellus glaber): Found in kitchens and bathrooms, attracted to sweet foods and moisture. Usually nesting outdoors but foraging inside. Smaller colonies than coastal browns but persistent indoors.
🐜 Green-headed ant (Rhytidoponera metallica): Common in gardens and lawns across SEQ. Their sting is genuinely painful and can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Often mistaken for a minor nuisance until someone gets stung.
🐜 Fire ant (Solenopsis invicta): A declared pest in Queensland. If you find a mound with no visible entry hole on top and ants that swarm aggressively when disturbed, stop and report it. Do not treat it yourself. Fire ants are a biosecurity issue, not a standard pest control job.
🐜 Carpenter ant (Camponotus spp.): Less common but worth knowing. These nest in timber, including structural timbers in older homes. Often confused with termites when found in wood.

The treatment that works for one species often does nothing for another. If you're getting recurring ant activity despite repeated DIY attempts, the colony and species identification matter more than the product you're using.
