Why do mosquito bites itch?

When a female mosquito bites, she injects saliva that stops your blood from clotting so she can feed. Your body releases histamine to fight this foreign substance, causing that annoying itch and swelling.

It's a reminder of why protecting communities from mosquito-borne diseases matters. Our Wolbachia method works with nature to block Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from transmitting viruses that cause dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever, creating self-sustaining protection without chemicals or genetic modification.

Imagine pain so intense, you feel like your bones are breaking. That's dengue fever.

Dengue fever is nicknamed "breakbone fever". And for good reason. The severe joint and muscle pain it causes is so intense that patients describe feeling like their bones are breaking.

A single mosquito bite can lead to weeks of high fever, debilitating pain and complete exhaustion.

Dengue continues to spread across more than 100 countries, affecting up to 400 million people annually. Our Wolbachia method provides a natural, safe and self-sustaining way to reduce dengue transmission, and we're already making a difference in 15 countries around the world.

By introducing Wolbachia bacteria into mosquito populations, we block their ability to spread the dengue virus.

No chemicals.

No genetic modification.

Just nature-based science protecting communities for the long term.

Did you know that male mosquitoes are actually vegetarians!

They feed on fruit and plant nectar, whilst females need blood meals for egg production. It's those biting females that spread diseases.

Our Wolbachia method introduces naturally occurring bacteria into mosquito populations, which reduces their ability to transmit dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Best of all? It's self-sustaining. One release protects communities for years. Since 2011, we've seen major disease reductions across our 14 countries, including a 77% reduction in our Indonesia trial!

: Did you know? The Aedes aegypti mosquito (which spreads dengue) typically flies less than 150 metres in its entire lifetime.

This is why community-level mosquito control is so effective - these mosquitoes don't travel far from where they were born!

Our Wolbachia method takes advantage of this behaviour, allowing us to protect entire communities with targeted releases.

Remember to check around your home for standing water where these 'homebodies' might be breeding!

Have a good weekend!

: Did you know that your sweat helps mosquitoes choose their next meal?

Our skin produces more than 340 different odours—and some smell absolutely irresistible to mosquitoes! That's why some people seem to attract more bites than others.

At the World Mosquito Program, our Wolbachia method helps protect communities from mosquito-borne diseases, regardless of how "tasty" your sweat might be!
