10 life hacks that actually work around the house (and most people skip half of them)
Some of these have been hiding in plain sight your whole life. The ice cube trick alone might change how you do laundry forever.
These aren't the kind of "hacks" that require a trip to a specialty store or a YouTube tutorial. They're the ones that use what's already in your kitchen, your bathroom, or your junk drawer, and they genuinely work.
The best tricks are almost always the simplest ones.
1. Refresh a stale baguette, run it under water to lightly moisten the crust, then pop it in a hot oven for about 8 minutes. It comes out tasting fresh-baked.
2. Stretch new shoes, put on thick socks, slip on your tight shoes, and blast a hair dryer on the snug spots for 30 seconds. Walk around while they're warm and they'll mold to your feet.
3. Make flowers last longer, add just a drop or two of bleach to the vase water. It keeps bacteria from building up and your bouquet stays fresh noticeably longer.
4. Open stubborn jars, hold a lighter near the metal lid for a few seconds to break the vacuum seal. The lid loosens right away.
5. Natural mouse repellent. A small bowl of coarse black pepper placed where mice tend to wander works surprisingly well. They hate the scent.
6. Keep cookies soft, drop a fresh slice of bread into the cookie jar. The cookies pull moisture from the bread and stay soft for days.
7. De-wrinkle laundry in the dryer, toss a few ice cubes in with your wrinkled clothes and run the dryer on high for 10 minutes. The steam does the work.
8. Clean a burnt pan, sprinkle baking soda over the bottom, add just enough water to cover it, and let it simmer on the stove. The burnt bits lift right off.
9. Peel garlic easily. Lay the flat side of your knife on a clove and give it one firm press. The skin cracks and slides off in seconds.
10. Secure your cutting board, a damp paper towel underneath stops it from sliding while you chop. Simple, but it makes a real difference when you're working fast.
Next time you're wrestling with a stuck jar or staring at a burnt pan, you'll already know exactly what to reach for. 🍋
