A broom in a Halloween story usually means a witch. 🧹

In this one, it means people trying to save their community’s place of worship.

In episode #232, I share the historical account of Prescott’s Chinese residents fighting flying embers with wet blankets and brooms during the Great Fire of 1900.

That detail stayed with me.

The simplest cleaning tool became part of a desperate effort to protect something precious.

A little Halloween history for you. 🕯️

Imagine uncovering a piece of a porcelain doll’s head beneath an old brothel.

Then learning that census records reportedly listed children living there.

We don’t know whose doll it was. But that little fragment makes you stop and wonder.

Before it was a parking lot… it was a whole different Prescott. 🎃

Behind Wh***ey Row stood a two-story brothel and a Chinese community whose stories nearly disappeared beneath the pavement.

But underground, belongings remained.

Hairbrushes. Perfume bottles. Broken dishes. A fragment of a porcelain doll’s head.

People sometimes ask how I know what to do when something goes wrong in a cleaning business.

Because I have blundered it. Hundreds, if not thousands, of times.

There’s a whole collection of “Yep, I did that. Don’t do that.” 😂

After 16 years, I have experience to pull from. Something happens, and I can think, “Okay, I’ve seen this before. Here’s where we start.”

I didn’t have that when I first started.

So if you’re still learning how to handle the hard conversations and decisions, give yourself room to learn.

Then use what happened to improve how you run the business.
