Happy Halloween from Johnson Pest Control! Once the trick-or-treaters are done, don't leave the pumpkins out too long. Carved and softening pumpkins draw mice, squirrels, and raccoons right up to your porch and foundation.

Compost or toss pumpkins within a few days. Keep leftover candy in sealed containers, and when the decorations come down, store them in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes. Mice love to nest in cardboard in garages and basements.

Finding brown, shield-shaped bugs on windows and walls? Brown marmorated stink bugs are looking for a place to spend the winter, and they get in through gaps around windows, doors, siding, and utility lines.

Not every lawn critter is a mole. Voles are small, short-tailed rodents that make narrow, worn trails across the grass and small open holes — no raised ridges or dirt mounds like moles.

Late fall is when they settle in. Under leaf cover and snow, voles stay active all winter, chewing grass, roots, and the bark at the base of young trees and shrubs. Most homeowners don't see the damage until the snow melts in spring.

Before the ground freezes: rake leaves off the lawn, give it one last short mow, and pull mulch a few inches back from tree and shrub trunks. If you're already seeing runways in Kalamazoo or Portage, we can help.

Those orange-red beetles coating the sunny side of the house in late October? Often Asian lady beetles — they gather to overwinter and can slip indoors through window frames and siding gaps.

They can stain walls and give off a strong smell when disturbed. Sweeping them outside (don’t crush indoors) and sealing entry points helps; we can help if they’re already inside in numbers.

As nights drop into the 40s, mice look for warm gaps around foundations, garage doors, and utility lines. One small opening is enough.

Seal what you can, keep food sealed, and don’t wait if you’re hearing scratching at night or finding droppings. Early control is easier than a full indoor infestation.

Seeing fresh ridges or soft tunnels across your lawn? That’s classic mole activity — they dig for earthworms and grubs, and cool fall weather can push them into new ground.

Moles don’t eat plants, but their tunnels can tear up turf and trip you up in the yard. If you’re in Kalamazoo or Portage and the ridges keep spreading, we can help map the runs and get control started.

Before the first hard freeze, take a walk around your home's exterior. A quick checklist:
• Gaps under doors and garage door seals
• Openings where pipes, wires, and A/C lines enter the house
• Damaged foundation vents or crawlspace screens
• Firewood, leaf piles, and mulch stacked against the foundation
Small openings are how mice and insects get in over the winter. If you'd like a professional set of eyes on your home before winter, call Johnson Pest Control at (269) 459-1788.

As temperatures drop in SW Michigan, squirrels and mice start looking for warm shelter, and attics are a common target. Signs to watch for:
• Scratching or running sounds in the ceiling, especially early morning
• Chewed fascia, soffits, or vent covers
• Droppings or shredded insulation in the attic
Trimming branches back from the roofline and checking roof vents, chimney caps, and soffit gaps can help before winter. If you're hearing noises overhead, call us at (269) 459-1788.

Seeing boxelder bugs or slow, sluggish flies on your sunny south- and west-facing walls? That's typical mid-October behavior in Kalamazoo and Portage. Boxelder bugs and cluster flies look for gaps around windows, siding, and soffits to spend the winter inside wall voids and attics.
What helps now:
• Seal gaps around window frames, utility lines, and vents
• Repair torn screens
• Vacuum up the ones that get indoors instead of crushing them
The best time to address overwintering pests is before they get inside. Questions? Call (269) 459-1788.

More spider webs on the porch and a few spiders indoors? That’s normal for October in Michigan. As nights cool, many spiders look for shelter—and your garage, basement, and window frames are inviting.

Most house spiders are harmless and even help with other insects. Still, sealing gaps around doors and windows, reducing clutter near foundations, and keeping exterior lights off when you can cuts down on what draws them in.

If you’re seeing a lot of activity inside and want help, Johnson Pest Control is here for Kalamazoo and Portage homes.
