This week a good amount of our team spent the day working on a large seal-up project at a local church. Standing on the roof, next to a steeple that's been part of the community for decades, it was hard not to think about how many Michigan winters that building has seen.

From the ground, most people would never notice the areas we were repairing. Small gaps, shifted flashing, and places where years of weather have slowly created an opportunity for wildlife.

One thing we appreciate about jobs like this is they remind me that good wildlife work isn't really about removing animals. It's about understanding buildings, understanding behavior, and fixing the small things most people never notice.

It was a great team day and a good reminder that attention to detail matters. The areas that cause the biggest headaches are often the ones you can't see from the ground.

Sometimes the biggest problems start with a gap no wider than your thumb.

People assume wildlife only shows up where people don’t.

That’s definitely not true.

Being close to Maple Lake in Paw Paw, our shop always has some interesting visitors beyond staff. Ducks wandering through. Geese stopping in. The occasional ospreys overhead. Recently we realized we desperately needed outdoor water, so after learning a few new tricks with PEX lines, we finally got a faucet hooked up outside.

A few days later, a turtle showed up parked directly underneath it.

We’re pretty sure we have turtle eggs somewhere nearby now 😂, but the timing felt a little too perfect to ignore.

🐝 Carpenter Bee Facts:

• Carpenter bees are actually VERY docile. The large bees hovering around people are usually males — and males don’t even have stingers. Females can sting but are typically extremely non-aggressive unless directly handled or trapped.

• Carpenter bee galleries can become surprisingly extensive over time. While a single tunnel may start small, repeated activity year after year can eventually create long interconnected galleries inside wood structures That have been known to be well over 10 ft long 😳 of chambers hollowed out over the years.

• Left untreated, carpenter bee damage can contribute to moisture intrusion, wood deterioration, and even attract secondary pests like woodpeckers that tear into siding, trim, and friezeboards searching for larvae.

✨ Luckily for these bees, even though they're definitely doing some pretty hardcore carnage, the homeowner is okay with having them. They just do not want to deal with squirrels inside their walls 😂.
*No bees were hurt in the making of this film 😆

NOW HIRING ⚒️ – Pest & Wildlife Management Specialist

Boone Wildlife & Pest Solutions is growing, and we're looking for a motivated, dependable person to join our team serving Southwest Michigan.

This ISN'T just a typical pest control job.

What matters most to us is doing things the right way — and doing them right the FIRST time. We value quality work, professionalism, attention to detail, and people who take pride in solving problems properly rather than taking shortcuts.

↪️We're looking for someone who is:

• Positive and willing to learn
• Dependable and team-oriented
• Comfortable working indoors and outdoors
• Comfortable using ladders and working at heights when needed
• Able to consistently lift and carry 50+ pounds safely
• Professional with strong customer service skills
• Looking for a long-term career, not just another job

Experience is a plus — but NOT required.

We are willing to train the right person. If you bring a strong work ethic, good attitude, and willingness to learn, we can teach the rest.

What we offer:

• $20–$27+ per hour depending on experience and qualifications
• Paid training
• Paid time off
• Retirement plan with company match
• Health insurance options
• Fuel card
• Advancement opportunities within a growing company

Most people assume wildlife gets into homes because something “failed.”

A lot of times, that’s not actually what happens.
Most wildlife entry points we run into are natural ventilation areas and building junctions. Rooflines meeting fascia. Dormer returns. Ridge vents. Areas where materials transition and airflow naturally exists. Houses need to breathe. Wildlife gets very good at finding where they do.

Today Owen wrapped up his biggest custom metal repair yet. Squirrels and bats had been taking advantage of an area most people would never think twice about from the ground.

Standing back afterward, it was one of those repairs that just felt good to look at. Clean. Thought through. Built to last. ..Beautiful work 👏

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave everything in service to our country.

Their sacrifice gave us freedoms we often enjoy without a second thought — time with family, quiet moments at home, and the communities we’re grateful to serve every day.

From all of us at Boone Wildlife & Pest Solutions, thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to the families who carry that sacrifice with them.

People usually picture squirrels getting in somewhere up high along the roofline 🏡, but a lot of the ones we deal with never even leave the ground level.

Today we finished up a foundation repair where squirrels had been chewing the same spot over and over near the base of the house. From the yard it honestly didn’t look like much. But once we opened it up, there was old rot and soft material underneath that had probably been slowly failing for years.

We run into this a lot. Sometimes the wildlife issue is really just the first visible sign that a part of the home was already struggling long before the animals showed up. Older materials, trapped moisture, or areas that were almost designed to rot over time.

The squirrels just happened to find it before anyone else did.

By the end, the repair blended back into the house like it had always been there. Will be back to take care of the rest of that side of the house here very soon 💪

Most people assume bees and wasps get aggressive the second spring shows up.

Truth is, right now, most of the ones we’re seeing around homes are queens. They don’t really have anything to defend yet. No colony. No workers. No nest full of larvae. Just a warm afternoon and a mission to find the right place to start one.

Spent part of the day walking rooflines and watching them drift in and out of tiny gaps around soffits, flashing, and vents. Some would circle the same spot over and over like they were inspecting an apartment before signing paperwork.

This time of year honestly feels less like pest season and more like a strange little real estate open house happening above people’s heads 😆.

Most homeowners never even notice it.

A little bit of mulch and landscaping can really change the feel of a place. Slowly but surely, we’re trying to make the front of the building feel a little more welcoming and add some charm here.

Still trying to decide what to do with our old sign though — open to suggestions!
