Ever wonder what's inside a pest control bait station and how it's designed to keep the bait secure?

Each station has our contact information, requires a special key to open, and uses internal pins to keep the bait in place. We secure our stations with weighted blocks or ground anchors, depending on the location, to keep them in place.

If you notice a broken or damaged bait station, let our team know so we can address it.

Good pest control is about more than treating the problem. It’s also about caring for the people and the home.

That means introducing yourself, wearing shoe covers, and taking the time to explain what you’re finding and how you’re addressing it.

That’s why, at Modern Pest Services, we like keeping the homeowner involved and making communication easy, which helps create a better experience from start to finish.

What actually happens during a professional pest control visit?

It starts with a thorough inspection to identify not just the pests, but why they’re there. From traps and stations to targeted bait, treatment matches the home's needs. After our service, the technician checks in with the resident, shares recommendations, and documents everything in a detailed service report.

That way, the next visit starts with a clear picture of what was found, what was done, and what to watch for.

Did you know there’s a fungus that can help eliminate bed bugs?

When an infected bed bug returns to the group, it can spread the fungus to other bed bugs hiding in cracks, crevices, and other hard to reach areas.

As the infection spreads, the bed bug population can eventually collapse. Once the bed bugs are gone, the fungus dies off because it no longer has a host.

It’s a fascinating example of using biology to target bed bugs where they hide.

Buying a home is a big investment, but you can’t always know what pest issues may be hiding around the property.

Even new construction can have gaps and entry points as the home settles over time. That’s why regular inspections are important. Pest professionals can identify conditions around your home that may attract pests or give them a way inside.

Preventative pest care can help catch entry points, moisture issues, and early signs of activity before they turn into larger problems.

That might look like a bee nest, but take a closer look. These are bald faced hornets, a type of wasp commonly found around New England homes. They build those large, paper-like nests in trees, under decks, eaves, and other protected areas.

Seeing hornets flying in and out of the entrance is a good sign that the nest is active. And while they aren’t looking for trouble, they can become very defensive if their nest is disturbed.

If you spot one around your home, give it some space and avoid trying to knock it down or spray it yourself. A pest professional can determine the best way to handle it safely.

As temperatures drop, pests start looking for sheltered places to spend the winter.

Window AC units can leave gaps where insects like lady beetles, seed bugs, and flies can get inside. Mice can also take advantage of gaps around doors, damaged weatherstripping, and other small exterior openings.

Before it gets cold, remove window units and check your screens, door seals, and other entry points to help keep pests outside.

Seeing ants keep popping up after treatment? Ant budding could be why.

When a colony splits, part of it can move to a new location and establish a satellite nest. That’s why treating the ants you see doesn’t always solve the problem.

Finding the source is key to controlling the infestation.

Not every web you spot in a tree means you have a pest problem.

These are likely fall webworms, a common sight in New England in late summer and early fall. The caterpillars build their webs around branch tips and feed on the leaves inside.

The good news? They typically don’t cause serious damage to healthy trees and will eventually move on. So if you spot one, there’s usually no need to panic; just know what you’re looking at.

Cooler weather means pests are looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter, and your home could be their next stop.

Overwintering pests like stink bugs, lady beetles, and cluster flies can sneak in through screens, windows, doors, and exterior cracks. Check for gaps now before they find their way inside.
