When we think of Cicadas, we probably think of the loud buzzing or the brown shells they leave behind when they shed their exoskeleton. The life cycle of a Cicada starts when a cicada hatches from its egg, nestled into the wood of a tree. It then eats the fluids and sap the tree produces, before crawling down to the ground to feed on plant roots. Depending on the species, a cicada nymph can spend anywhere between 2 to 17 years underground! Finally, the nymph comes up to the surface as a fully grown cicada, leaving its old exoskeleton for us to find.

Ladybugs have two things that help them to avoid becoming someone’s meal. The first is their vibrant coloration that warns predators not to eat them. Second is the toxic, oily yellow substance that ladybugs secrete from joints in their legs. It smells and tastes terrible, so it discourages a predator from eating them.
