💜 This page from my book says exactly who I wrote it for. 💜
I didn't write One Day at a Time because my family was perfect.
I wrote it because it wasn't.
I wrote it for the child who learned what addiction was far too young.
For the person who loves someone struggling with addiction and desperately wishes they could make things better.
And one thing I learned through my own experience is this:
Just because someone has an addiction doesn't mean you stop loving them.
If anything, it made me love them more. It made me want to help more, try harder, and somehow find a way to make everything okay.
But eventually I had to face one of the hardest truths about loving someone with an addiction:
You can't help someone who doesn't want help.
You can love them.
You can pray for them.
You can encourage them.
You can hope for them.
You can be there when they're ready.
But you cannot make the decision to change for them.
Sometimes loving someone through addiction means realizing that their battle isn't yours to fight for them—even when you would give anything to be able to.
That's part of why I wrote this book.
For the families who have experienced the anger, disappointment, heartbreak and loss that addiction can bring, while still loving the person behind the addiction.
And for anyone who has looked at their own life and decided:
The cycle stops with me. ❤️
One Day at a Time isn't only a story about addiction. It's about family, loss, love, forgiveness, faith, healing, and hope.
If sharing my story helps even one person realize they're not alone, then telling it was worth it.
