Being a Professional Cleaner Doesn’t Automatically Mean You’re Good at Cleaning.
This might upset a few people in my industry, but I think it needs to be said.
Getting paid to clean somebody’s house doesn’t automatically make you a good cleaner.
Neither does owning a cleaning company.
You can buy a vacuum, a mop, some microfiber cloths, and a few bottles of cleaning products this afternoon and advertise yourself as a professional cleaner tomorrow.
There’s a pretty low barrier to entry.
And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. It’s one of the reasons cleaning can be such a good business opportunity for somebody who’s willing to work hard.
But there’s a difference between starting a cleaning business and knowing how to clean professionally.
Do you understand cross-contamination?
Do you know which chemicals are safe for different surfaces?
Do you understand disinfectant contact times?
Can you recognize when a product might damage somebody’s flooring, countertops, or fixtures?
Do you have a system that produces consistent results, or are you just walking around somebody’s house wiping down whatever catches your eye?
These things matter.
You’re entering somebody’s home. You’re handling their belongings. You’re working around their children, pets, and personal spaces.
And they’re trusting you to know what you’re doing.
I’m coming up on my first year operating The Clean Up Crew, and I’ll be the first to admit that I know considerably more about cleaning today than I did when I started.
I’m still learning.
That’s exactly why I think the attitude of a professional matters so much.
You don’t need to know everything on day one.
But you should care enough to learn.
Professionalism isn’t something you become just because somebody pays you. It’s something you demonstrate through the way you work.
And that applies to a lot more industries than cleaning.
I’d genuinely like to hear from other cleaners on this one.
What’s something you know now that you wish you’d understood when you first started?
