Cockroaches are some of the toughest survivors on Earth — and one of their strangest abilities is living without a head. Because they breathe through spiracles — tiny holes along the sides of their body — they don’t rely on their head or mouth to keep oxygen flowing. Their open circulatory system also means they don’t “bleed out” the way mammals would. In fact, if you remove a cockroach’s head, its body will keep moving, sensing, and reacting for up to one full week.

So why do they eventually die? Not from the injury itself, but from dehydration. Without a mouth to drink, the cockroach slowly dries out and collapses. It’s a survival trick that sounds like science fiction — a living, headless insect continuing its routine, until thirst finally ends it.
