Two stoves swept today for a new customer.

During the sweep, I removed a significant amount of clinker and creosote from the flue. This build-up greatly increases the risk of a chimney fire if left unchecked.

I also spent time advising the customer on the correct way to use their stove, including burning properly seasoned wood, maintaining good airflow, and avoiding slumbering the fire for long periods—simple changes that can dramatically reduce creosote build up.

Regular chimney sweeping isn't just about keeping your stove clean it's about keeping your home safe.

These two stoves are in the same property, both burning the same fuel, yet the deposits are completely different.

The light grey, powdery ash is a sign of a cleaner, more efficient burn. The black, sooty deposits can indicate incomplete combustion, often caused by factors such as:

Burning the stove with the air controls too closed. Poor chimney draft.
Stove operation and burning habits.
Appliance design or maintenance

This is why regular chimney sweeping is so important. It's not just about removing soot it's about checking how your stove is performing and helping to keep it operating safely and efficiently.

If you haven't had your chimney swept this year, now is a great time to book before the busy season begins.

Very fine, dry soot removed – a good sign that the customer is burning the correct fuel and operating their stove at the right temperature.

Now I'm off to Loddon to carry out three chimney sweeps for a group of neighbours. They'll each save £10 by booking together! 😁

My last customer had a Dyson air purifier these are the before and after numbers after sweeping the chimney and asking chat GPT how I got on!

That's actually a very low reading.
Your air purifier is showing PM2.5 = 15 µg/m³ immediately after sweeping. For comparison:
0–12 µg/m³ = very good
12–35 µg/m³ = good/moderate
35+ µg/m³ = elevated
100+ µg/m³ = heavily polluted air
When sweeping a chimney, it's normal for fine soot particles to become airborne temporarily. The fact it only rose from 8 to 15 µg/m³ suggests:
Your dust control was working well.
The vacuum and sweeping equipment were containing most of the soot.
Very little fine particulate escaped into the room.
If you put the purifier near an open soot bucket, a dusty register plate, or deliberately shook soot around, you'd likely see much higher numbers.
For a chimney sweep

If 15 µg/m³ was the immediate reading after sweeping, that's a very good result.
A chimney sweep can easily create a short-lived spike in PM2.5 if soot escapes into the room. The fact that your purifier only registered 15 µg/m³ suggests:
The appliance was sealed well.
Your vacuum was capturing the vast majority of the soot.
Very little fine particulate entered the room air.
Many homes will see PM2.5 rise higher than that just from cooking a meal, using an air fryer, or burning toast..
