Cosy nights and crackling fires are a welcome comfort on colder evenings but it’s important to use them safely.

If your log burner or open fire is back in use, make sure your chimney has been swept and your appliance properly serviced to help reduce the risk of chimney fires.

Keep logs, coal and other fuels stored well away from the heat, and always use a spark guard to stop embers escaping.

Don’t let a preventable chimney fire undo the comfort of your evening.

An important read ⚠️

An important read ⚠️

We’re seeing this far too often lately, so it needs to be said plainly:

A chimney breast should not be constructed out of timber with a wood burning stove. Clues in the name!

This fireplace was only a few fires away from going up in flames! 🔥

A wood burner gives off sustained heat over long periods. Timber hidden behind plasterboard can dry out, slowly char and, over time, become a serious fire risk. Just because it’s covered up and looks neat doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Plasterboard, fireboard or a skim coat does not make timber suitable behind a stove. Clearances to combustible materials matter, and they are there for a reason. Building Regulations and stove manufacturers are very clear on this point.

If a builder suggests timber framing because it’s quicker or cheaper, that should raise concerns.

Get it checked, get it signed off, and get it done properly by a professional (us) 😊

Let’s talk alarms for a minute… I know sometimes we don’t want to hear it or know we should have them in our homes and don’t but today has highlighted to me just how important they are.

Usually I’m banging on about how you should have a carbon monoxide alarm or even if you have one to move it slightly so it’s in a better place, should you ever need it to go off it will but today I’d like to raise some awareness to just how important it is to also have WORKING smoke alarms.

As I left for work this morning I could hear an alarm going off so naturally I went to see where it was coming from to find out it was a neighbours house, at this point I couldn’t really see or smell anything, just hear them.

I had a quick look around and realised a small fire had not long started in their kitchen, I called the fire brigade (who I have to say got there so quickly!) and was frantically ringing their ring door bell to try contact them to gain access and get their pets out as quickly as possible.

Luckily everyone is well and no real damage has been done but let this be a reason to make sure any alarms in your home are fit for purpose and fully working, making sure to test them every now and again because you just never know when you may need them! 🖤

It is also one of the leading causes of tar starting to form/build up leading to those chimney fires..

Stay safe, burn correctly & have your chimney sweep regularly or atleast once a year but it’s also important to follow your sweeps professional opinion.

Get in touch to book yours in today! 🔥

We normally share carbon monoxide (CO) safety tips on a Tuesday, so our post is in keeping with this and Chimney Fire Safety Week. Avoid slumbering your stove as this can increase levels of CO and the risk of a chimney fire!

Slumbering refers to the practice of intentionally dampening down the fire and reducing the air supply to make the fire burn slowly for an extended period, often overnight. 🌃🔥
