Meet the new voice at the helm of the CSSA.

Steve Harrop FCIM has joined as General Manager & Operational Lead of the Cleaning & Support Services Association - and his first message to the industry is a simple one: he's here to listen.

"As I begin this role my priority is you - our members. I want to understand your business, hear your views, and learn about the opportunities and challenges you face."

For nearly 60 years, the CSSA has been the national voice for the UK's contract cleaning industry - championing the professionalism, innovation and people that our sector delivers every day. Steve steps into that role at a pivotal moment, with a clear belief that the strongest organisations are built on trust, openness and collaboration.

That means communication that runs both ways. Whether you have ideas, feedback, questions or concerns, Steve wants to hear them - and your insights will help shape the CSSA's priorities for the future.
This is an exciting time for our industry, and there's a real opportunity to build on it together.

Want to introduce yourself or share what you'd like to see from your Association? Steve would genuinely welcome the conversation - get in touch or connect with him on LinkedIn πŸ‘‰ https://www.linkedin.com/in/steveharropuk/

Save the date: the CSSA Savoy Luncheon returns to The Savoy on Friday 4 June 2027.

Three weeks ago, this year's luncheon raised almost Β£12,000 for Catch22, a charity doing genuine work to help young people build the kind of futures most of us take for granted.

A thank you, as always, to our exclusive sponsor Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene Supplies, and to everyone who came, gave and made the day what it was.

If you haven't seen them yet, this year's professional photos are up on our website. Well worth a look back before we do it all again next June: https://www.cssa-uk.co.uk/industry-savoy-lunch-1

Put Friday 4 June 2027 in the diary now. We'd love to see you there.

For a lot of bright young people, the question isn't whether they're capable of university. It's whether their family can afford to send them.

The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners has just launched something to change that. The Breaking Barriers Bursary offers Β£5,000 a year, for up to three years, to a young person whose parent or guardian works anywhere in the UK cleaning industry.

It's open to 18–25 year-olds starting university this autumn - any degree subject, any employer. Applicants are assessed on need, endeavour and overall performance, alongside a short personal statement.

This is the kind of practical investment our sector should be proud of. It sits naturally alongside CSSA's CleanStart initiative, which is changing how young people see careers in cleaning - work that recently reached a national audience on BBC's The One Show. CleanStart opens eyes to the opportunity; the bursary helps remove a financial barrier that can stand in the way of it.

If someone in your team has a son, daughter or dependant heading to university this year, this could be for them. Please share it widely - the further it travels, the more it can do.

Applications close 1 August 2026!

Nearly one million 16–24 year-olds in the UK are currently not in education, employment or training. Our industry has over 11,500 vacancies - and a proven track record of welcoming them in.

CSSA members: join us on Monday 6th July, 1–2pm for an exclusive online Lunch & Learn session with John Spragett, Recruitment and Partnership Consultant from the DWP's Strategic Relationship Team. John will walk us through the government's Youth Guarantee scheme and introduce Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) - short, flexible programmes that combine training, work experience and a guaranteed interview to help you build a pipeline of sector-ready young talent.

If you've been thinking about how to bring more young people into your business - and what government support is available to help you do it - this session is for you.

CSSA members only. Registration closes 2nd July at 2pm. The webinar link will be sent to registered members via email on 3rd July.
