CQC Learning Reflection: When “To” and “Past” Got Mixed Up!

In home care, every minute matters. The people and families we support rely on us to communicate clearly and arrive when expected.

On this particular day, we had Plan A and Plan B for the journey to a client's home, but neither planner could help when we mixed up quarter to and quarter past!

The meeting was scheduled for 5:45, but we understood it to be 6:15. Then the on-call phone rang: “You’re late!” A simple misunderstanding had created a 30-minute gap. We contacted the family, explained what had happened, shared a laugh and carried on.

Our learning: We will confirm appointment times clearly, check schedules before setting off, record any changes accurately and keep families informed. We will use the experience to strengthen communication and improve our systems.

CQC’s assessment framework highlights safe care, providing accurate information and a culture of openness, learning and improvement.

Because in care, Plan A and Plan B are useful - but a quick time check might be the best route of all!
