Most people assume this red staining is rust or permanent damage.
In reality, it’s often a species of airborne algae called Trentepohlia.
It thrives in damp shaded environments and is something we regularly see on rendered homes throughout the Lake District.
The important thing is that this is living organic contamination — which is why simply painting over it often doesn’t solve the underlying issue long term.
