Stirring paint with a stick? STOP 🛑 It won’t be stirring your paint properly & may negatively affect its performance.

This reel is the first in our ‘How To’ series teaching you all about paint, starting with the very basics: how to stir paint properly.

It may sound silly but there’s a simple art to stirring paint that we explain below. It’s a bit like making a cake – if you don’t mix all the ingredients properly your bake will go wrong.

Paint is made with multiple raw materials including resin (to make the coating) & colour pigments. All of the ingredients can settle out in transit or if the pot is left sitting at home, with heavier material dropping to the bottom & lighter rising to the top of the tin.

Before painting mix all the ingredients together really well so that it works properly. We think it’s best shaken and stirred, so start by giving the tin a good shake to get things moving.

Some colour pigments are heavier than others and as most paints are made up with a blend of colour pigments, if you don’t mix them together properly then you won’t necessarily see the correct colour.

Don’t use something really thin like a stick to stir the paint with as it won’t be very effective – use a paint stirrer, big wooden spoon or spatula like you would with a cake mixture & if the paint has been sat around for months you can use a cheap old hand blender for a quick and thorough mix.

If you don’t get the resin mixed in full suspension then the coating can be negatively affected and won’t be as strong as it should be, so give the tin a good stir before and during use, and you’ll end up with a perfectly stirred pot of paint!

TIP - our paint is tinted and mixed fresh to order so if you paint soon after delivery it will only need stirring for 30-60 seconds. The longer it’s sat for the longer it will need mixing so can take a good 2 minutes or more.

TIP 2 – use a paint tin opener rather than a screwdriver with a small head so it doesn’t buckle the tin lid making it easier to reseal the paint tin when you’ve finished. Clean off paint from the tin & lid rims so they don’t stick together and become diffic

Time for tea? Refresh old vintage finds with our wood paint for a durable satin coating that’s easy to clean, highly durable and made with VOC free exterior grade colour pigments so the colours last years.

After a light sand this tea trolley was painted with a couple of coats of Rock Rose and Doulting Stone wood paint giving it a lovely old country cottage look.

It’s no longer covered in cakes but years later is still a very useful piece of furniture that brings me a lot of joy!

If you want a flat matt finish then use or luxurious Wall Paint that also adheres directly to wood and metal with no need for a primer.

From the ashes rose a concept for a fire themed bed in the garden 🔥

When an old fireplace had to be ripped out I couldn’t bear to part with it and at some point knew I’d find a use for it. Then a piece of wall in the garden that looked a bit like a chimney provided the perfect inspiration and backdrop for a fire bed!

After thinking I was a bit mad my husband went along with my plan, helping to lay the hearth stone and secure the surround with a mantlepiece that he designed and cut from old pieces of softwood.

I then painted the wooden mantlepiece with four coats of Dulcote Stone Wood Paint to contrast with the marble and cement colours. Horizontal surfaces degrade a lot quicker than verticals outside due to rain driving into them and sitting on them, along with freezing, so four coats made the coating really thick and durable so I shouldn’t have to paint it for many years.

Then came the fun part of selecting and planting fire themed plants with spikey architectural leaves and red, orange and yellow blooms. I love the result and it provides the perfect place to sit at the picnic table, looking especially dramatic as the sun sets.

Stripes and stencils make decorative and dappled shading when you don’t want to shade an entire greenhouse panel.

I wanted to provide some shade for aubergines and hot peppers in the greenhouse but know they like it quite hot so didn’t want to block out the sun entirely.

So I used masking tape to create big stripes on the top panel that gets the most direct sunlight, then floral stencils from the Summer and Golden Floral Stencil kits to provide dappled shading on another two panes.

I used the Cathedral Green Peelable Glass Paint that was left on the roller after painting the stripes, and that had plenty of paint left on it for the stencils.

Escape to the allotment and explore this heavenly hideaway!

This gorgeous greenhouse sits in the allotment plot of first time gardener and allotmenteer, Andrea Doughty. Her allotment in Cambridgeshire is her happy place so she wanted the greenhouse shading to be functional but beautiful, whilst maintaining the peaceful atmosphere of the space.

She contacted us for advice then selected 150ml tins of Peelable Glass Paint in Greylake, White Witch, Doulting Stone, Moorland Green and Sedge Green to create this patchwork shading pattern throughout her greenhouse.

Andrea is very happy with the results and the plants are positively bursting inside. We absolutely love what she’s created and how she has made her greenhouse look beautiful and within keeping of the whole allotment. Thank you for sharing with us!

At the end of the hot sunny season you can remove the paint coating in a satisfying peel. The longer the paint is left on for the coat will continue to harden especially in direct intense sun, so the coating may not be as soft and easy to peel, but there are tips and tricks for removal if this happens. You can send the old coatings back to our factory in Glastonbury for us to recycle!

Tip 1: peel off the coating in the early morning when it’s nice and moist from dew
Tip 2: rehydrate the coating with water
Tip 3: spray on an alkaline solution such as a cheap household bleach spray which will soften the bond to the glass and make it easy to either peel, scrape or wipe off

Scorched seedlings from the hot summer sun? Time to get shady with Peelable Glass Paint and protect those plants in the greenhouse.

I had only painted the central two roof panes on my greenhouse when the heat wave came along and scorched the delicate young leaves of lots of my seedlings that were in full sun. So before the next heat wave marched in I got another small pot of Peelable Glass Paint in Cathedral Green to contrast with the lighter Wispy Willow of the centre panes, gave the windows a clean with soapy water, dried them, put a masking tape border around so I didn’t get paint on the woodwork, then quickly and easily rollered on the paint.

I then decided to get creative adding dappled shade to side windows with stripes and stencils so watch out for that reel coming soon!

With the shading paint on the seedlings and young veg plants are sat happily back in a shaded greenhouse.

Members of the Wild Roots community let their creativity go wild in a glass painting decorating session. We donated some Peelable Glass Paint and Stencil Craft Packs to this lovely charity located near to our factory in Glastonbury.

This wonderful organisation was set-up to support young adults not in education, training or employment, and offer wellbeing sessions in their beautiful therapeutic gardens.

In this session they decorated glass jars with the Peelable Glass Paint and stencils, creating attractive holders to display their posies for sale on a roadside stall.
