In the UK, bird nesting season for chimneys runs roughly from February to August, with peak activity from March to July, making it illegal to disturb active nests due to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Common culprits like jackdaws build nests from twigs and debris, blocking flues and creating fire hazards, so prevention with cowls/guards is best, and removal is only legal and safe in September/October after birds have fledged.
When to Expect Nests:
Season: Late February to late August.
Peak: March to July.
Common Birds: Jackdaws are frequent nesters, often starting in April.
Signs of a Nest:
Twigs, leaves, mud falling into your fireplace.
Unusual chirping sounds from the chimney.
Fire smoking back into the room.
Legal & Safety Issues:
Illegal to Disturb: It's an offense to damage or destroy an active nest.

What to Do (and When):
During Nesting Season (Mar-Aug): Do not remove the nest; wait for the chicks to fledge.
After Nesting Season (Sept/Oct): This is the legal time to have the nest safely removed by a professional sweep and install deterrents.
Prevention: Install chimney cowls or bird guards before the next nesting season to stop birds from nesting in the first place.
