Wow, that's a high up wasps nest!

We attended to a customers garden yesterday as we suspected there would be the need to report an Asian Hornet nest to the Non-Native Species Secertariat. Much to our suprise it was a domestic wasp species with nest predation by European Hornets.

In this instance the nest was high enough and far enough from the customers house to leave alone.

It's worth remebering that wasps are beneficial to the environment and should be left alone where possible.

As we move further into summer, wasps and hornets naturally switch from hunting insects to searching for sugary foods.

Earlier in the season, workers collect insects to feed the developing larvae. In return, the larvae produce a sweet liquid that feeds the adult workers. By late summer, colonies have many workers but much less brood, so that natural food source disappears. This is why you suddenly see wasps around soft drinks, fruit, beer gardens and picnics.

If wasps are becoming a nuisance around your home or business, use selective wasp traps designed to target social wasps while minimising the capture of beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Avoid using non-selective traps, as these can have a significant impact on local wildlife.

Remember, wasps and hornets are important predators that help control flies, caterpillars and other pest insects. They are a valuable part of our ecosystem, so control should always be targeted and proportionate.

Reminder: it is now an offence to use, supply or possess a banned glue trap in Scotland 🚫

New rules came into force on 1 July under the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024, and falling foul of the ban could result in imprisonment of up to five years and/or a fine of £40,000. 💰

It’s amazing what you find during an in-depth survey! A fantastic photo from our service supervisor, Andy. He found this little mischief maker using a hole leading directly into a building. This is why maintaining properties combined with thorough surveys are so important. A perfect example of integrated pest management! Thanks for the photo Andy!

Anyone in the Ashford area recognise this lovely chap who tried to break into our neighbours premises early hours of Sunday morning? Grainy image but he does have a distinctive back pack. We are all small local businesses on our industrial estate. It’s people like this who make it hard for all of us.
