It’s always good to hear that a customer was happy with both how quickly we responded and how the job was handled.

This recent feedback came from Erin Galloway after we helped with a pest issue.

“Very quick to respond and got the job done within a couple days. Very friendly and efficient.”

When someone reaches out with a pest problem, I try to keep things simple. Respond quickly, figure out what needs to be done, and get the issue taken care of without making the process more complicated than it needs to be.

When I inspect a Coquitlam home for rodents, I'm trying to piece together how they're using the property.

Droppings can tell me where they've been, but I also look for chewing, nesting material, rub marks, tracks, and openings that may be giving them access to the house.

Garages, crawl spaces, utility areas, and the foundation are some of the places I spend time checking because small entry points can easily be overlooked.

Once I understand where the rodents are travelling and how they're getting inside, I can focus on the active areas and what needs to be done to prevent continued access.

Rodent control isn't just about catching what's already inside.

If the opening that allowed them in is still there, another mouse or rat can eventually use the same route.

One thing I recommend to Coquitlam homeowners in October is checking the house from the outside before rodents start finding their way in.

Take a slow walk around the foundation and look at the small details.

Check underneath exterior doors, around vents, where pipes and cables enter the house, and along the corners of the garage. A gap that doesn't look like much to us can still be enough for a mouse.

Then look at what's around the property.

Garbage should be secure, pet food and bird seed should be stored properly, and fallen fruit shouldn't be left sitting around the yard. It also helps to keep clutter and stored materials away from the outside walls.

None of this takes much time, but it can remove some of the easiest food sources and entry points rodents use during the fall.

October is when I start seeing a shift in rodent activity around Coquitlam.

As temperatures drop and we get further into the wetter part of fall, mice and rats start looking for places where they can stay dry, find food, and avoid the colder conditions outside.

For a lot of homes, that can mean garages, crawl spaces, basements, sheds, and even spaces inside walls.

The first sign is not always seeing a mouse. It might be a scratching sound at night, droppings along a garage wall, or a bag of pet food that suddenly has a hole in it.

Rodents are good at staying out of sight, especially when they've found a quiet area that doesn't get disturbed very often.

That is why October is a good time to pay attention to the small signs before rodents have a chance to settle in for the colder months.

I hear from a lot of Coquitlam homeowners who keep removing spider webs, only to see them back in the same places a few days later.

When that keeps happening, I usually look at the area around the webs instead of just the spiders themselves.

Outdoor lights, insects around windows, cluttered garages, storage areas, and shrubs touching the house can all give spiders a reason to stay close.

Removing webs regularly helps, but so does sealing small gaps, checking window screens, trimming plants back, and reducing insect activity around entry points.

If the same corners or windows keep getting new webs, there is usually something nearby that is making that spot a good place for spiders to settle.

I still get calls about wasps around Coquitlam late in the summer, especially when nests have had time to grow.

Most homeowners first notice wasps moving in and out of the same area near a roofline, deck, shed, fence, or exterior wall. When that traffic stays consistent throughout the day, there is usually a nest nearby.

The biggest mistake I see is people trying to block the opening or knock the nest down without knowing how active it is. That can make the situation worse and increase the chance of getting stung.

Keeping garbage covered, cleaning up food and drinks outside, and checking quiet areas around the property can help reduce what attracts them.

If wasps keep returning to the same spot around your Coquitlam home, it is worth finding out exactly where they are nesting.

I usually assume there’s activity somewhere that hasn’t been found yet when roaches keep appearing after they’ve been cleaned up or sprayed.

That’s why I don’t just focus on the spot where someone saw a roach.

Around Coquitlam homes, I check underneath sinks, behind refrigerators and stoves, around plumbing lines, inside cabinets, and along cracks and gaps where roaches can stay hidden.

I also want to know what’s allowing them to stay there. A small leak, food debris behind an appliance, or clutter in a cabinet can all contribute to ongoing activity.

Once I understand where the problem is concentrated, treatment can be targeted to those areas rather than simply spraying whatever happens to be visible.

Follow-up is also important with roaches because activity can continue out of sight. I want to see that the problem is actually going down and staying down.

I usually tell homeowners in Coquitlam to start with food and moisture if they’ve begun seeing roaches around the home.

Clean crumbs and grease from counters, floors, and underneath appliances. Don’t leave dirty dishes sitting overnight, and keep pantry items and pet food in sealed containers.

Then check underneath kitchen and bathroom sinks for leaks or damp areas. Roaches don’t need a lot of water, so even a slow drip can help keep them around.

Garbage should be emptied regularly, and cardboard boxes or unnecessary clutter should be reduced where possible. Those quiet spaces can give roaches plenty of places to hide.

These steps won’t necessarily get rid of an active infestation, but removing food, water, and hiding spots can make the home much less suitable for them.

I usually start hearing more concerns about roaches around Coquitlam in September.

A lot of the calls start the same way. Someone walks into the kitchen at night, turns on the light, and notices a roach near the sink or running underneath an appliance.

The problem is that the roaches you see are only part of what may be going on. They spend a lot of time hidden behind appliances, underneath sinks, inside cabinets, and around plumbing where they have access to moisture.

Around Coquitlam homes, kitchens and bathrooms are two of the first areas I pay attention to because they provide the food, water, and hiding places roaches are looking for.

They can also contaminate food and surfaces as they move around, so repeated sightings are not something I recommend ignoring.

If you've seen more than one roach around your home, it's worth figuring out where the activity is coming from.
