THE TRAIL ON YOUR BENCH IS A SUPPLY LINE.

Coastal brown ants are Townsville's most common call-out, and the reason is simple: they are looking for water, and in August your kitchen is the wettest place on the property.

The trail you can see is a supply line running back to a nest that may sit under the slab, in a wall cavity, beneath pavers or in the garden bed by the tap. Spraying the trail kills the couriers and tells the colony to relocate — which is why the ants reappear three metres to the left a week later. Some species will bud into multiple satellite nests under chemical pressure, so a supermarket spray can genuinely make the problem larger.

Environ uses non-repellent transfer products and eco-friendly gel baits that ants carry home. The colony is treated at its source, including the queen.

Everything you fix now costs a fraction of what it costs in November. The build-up is roughly six weeks away, and pest pressure in Townsville rises with the humidity — fast.

Start outside. Pull mulch back 100 mm from every wall. Move the firewood stack off the ground and away from the house. Clear the gutters properly, not partially. Trim any branch touching the roof line, because that is a bridge for rodents, ants and possums alike.

Then look for water. Leaking taps, air-conditioner condensate lines, blocked drains, pot saucers, the old wheelbarrow behind the shed. Standing water is the single biggest driver of mosquito pressure once the storms arrive.

Finally, check the seals. Door sweeps, window screens, weep holes, the gap where the pipework enters the wall.

Do it now while it is 27 degrees and dry, not in January while it is 34 and raining.
