Soft plastics can be tricky - but getting it right makes a big difference.

Items like bread bags, chip packets, and plastic wrapping should not go in your recycling bin.

Why?

Because soft plastics can tangle in sorting equipment and contaminate other recyclable materials.

Instead:
✔ Check for dedicated soft plastics recycling programs
✔ Store separately until proper drop-off is available
✔ Keep them out of kerbside recycling bins

Reducing contamination helps ensure more materials are successfully recovered and recycled.

When in doubt - leave it out.

As the seasons change, so do the appliances we rely on.

With summer behind us, now’s the time to safely dispose of old fans, air coolers, and unused electronics before switching to heaters and winter appliances.

Remember: E-waste doesn’t belong in your kerbside bin.

Items like fans, heaters, and small appliances contain a mix of materials - metal, plastic, and sometimes batteries - that require specialised recycling.

Instead, take your e-waste to:
✔ Local resource recovery centres
✔ Approved recycling facilities
✔ Designated drop-off points

Responsible e-waste disposal helps recover valuable materials and prevents environmental harm.

Make the seasonal switch the right way.

This ANZAC Day, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women, past and present.

We remember those who gave their lives, and we acknowledge the enduring legacy of the ANZAC spirit — courage, mateship, and resilience.

Today, we pause to reflect, remember, and pay our respects.

Hazardous materials in the waste stream can pose a serious fire risk.

Items such as fuels, chemicals, lithium batteries, and pressurised containers like aerosols can ignite or explode when compacted in collection vehicles or waste facilities.

Aerosols can be placed in the recycling bin, but only if they are completely empty. Partially full aerosols should be taken to designated drop-off points.

These hazardous items should never be placed in kerbside bins. They must be taken to approved drop-off locations or hazardous waste facilities where they can be handled safely.

Correct disposal helps protect drivers, resource recovery staff, collection vehicles, and the wider community, while reducing the risk of dangerous incidents.

Batteries should never be placed in general waste or recycling bins.

When damaged or compressed in collection vehicles or waste facilities, they can spark and cause serious fires.

The safest option is to take used batteries to approved battery recycling drop-off points, available at many supermarkets, hardware stores, and community collection locations.

Correct battery disposal helps protect drivers, resource recovery staff, collection vehicles, and recycling facilities.
