SOMETIMES, THE BEST MOMENTS ARE THE UNPLANNED ONES

Last Sunday morning, we decided to do something a little different.

No big plans. No schedule to follow. Just an unplanned visit to the beach.

We walked along the shore, picked up shells, sat with our feet in the sand, and watched the birds diving into the water to catch their breakfast. 🐦

Around us, people were enjoying the beach in their own ways — walking, chatting, playing, or simply soaking up the sunshine and fresh ocean breeze.

And there we were, taking it all in.

Sometimes, we get so caught up in our everyday routines that we forget how much a little time in nature can do for the soul. The sound of the waves, the feel of the sand, the birds going about their day, and that wonderful ocean breeze seemed to wash away some of the week's busyness.

It reminded me how many beautiful things God has placed around us to enjoy — often without asking anything from us except that we slow down long enough to notice them. 🤍

We left feeling refreshed, grateful, and re-energized.

And then we walked into Walmart with our wet pants and all! 😂😂

A little reminder for today: You don't always need a special occasion, an elaborate plan, or a lot of money to make a beautiful memory. Sometimes, all you need is a little fresh air, an open heart, and the willingness to take an unplanned turn.

May you find a little moment of peace, joy, and wonder in your ordinary day today. 🌿

What is one simple, unplanned moment that has brought you joy lately?

Things We Learned the Hard Way:
The Driveway That Took More Than Gravel

When we bought our homestead, we thought creating a driveway would be fairly straightforward.

Well… it wasn't. 😂

The problem was the access road.

We had to get permission from an older neighbor who was very much old school. And let's just say… my husband had to use every bit of diplomacy he had. 😅

There were conversations. There was patience. There was probably a little more patience. And eventually, we got there.

Looking back, that driveway taught us two things:

1. If you can avoid buying property with a servitude road running through it, do yourself a favor.

There can be extra paperwork, extra complications, and extra conversations with neighbors. And that piece of land will never quite feel like it's completely yours.

2. Kindness and patience can get you through a lot of obstacles.

Sometimes you can't change the situation you're in. You can only change how you handle it.

And sometimes, if you handle it with enough patience and respect, you don't just solve the problem…

you might make a friend along the way.

That's something worth remembering—whether you're building a driveway, building a business, or just trying to get through an ordinary difficult day.

Things we learned the hard way… so maybe you don't have to. ❤️

WHERE IT ALL STARTED 🌿
Our homestead story — Part 1

Before we had a driveway, a garden, animals, buildings or all the things that eventually became part of our homestead...

there was this little path.

This was the entrance to the property when we bought it in 2006.

It was a servitude path between two neighbouring properties, and at the time it was only possible to enter on foot.

If we wanted to actually use the property with vehicles, we first had to get permission from both neighbours to create an entrance.

That was just the beginning.

We didn't move onto a finished, picture-perfect homestead. We started with what we had, very little money, plenty of ideas and a lot of figuring things out along the way.

And thankfully, my husband has always been a “let's see if we can make it work” kind of person. 😄

Long before we bought the homestead, he had spent years tinkering, rebuilding old cars, learning practical skills and eventually working as a fitter and turner. In 1999, he started his own business.

So when we arrived at this little piece of land in 2006, there was already a lifetime of practical knowledge behind him.

But knowing how to build and repair things doesn't mean you have everything you need.

Sometimes you have to improvise.

Sometimes you use old materials.

Sometimes you learn the hard way.

And sometimes you simply look at a problem and say:

“Okay... how are we going to make this work?”

That little path was the beginning of a very long journey.

And we're going back to the beginning to share some of it with you. ❤️

Next: getting vehicles onto the property...

KITCHEN TIP 🏡✨
Make your kitchen unattractive to unwanted visitors

Weevils, ants and cockroaches are always looking for the same things: food, water, warmth and somewhere to hide.

One thing I've learned over the years is that prevention makes a HUGE difference.

Here’s what I do — and still do:

🥣 Store dry foods properly
Flour, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, grains, sugar and similar foods go into airtight containers. When practical, I prefer keeping them in the freezer.

🗑️ Don't let food smells sit in your kitchen
Peels, opened cans, food scraps and opened food packaging go into a small plastic bag. I close it tightly and keep it in the freezer until it's time to take out the trash.

The only things I normally put directly into the indoor trash are dry items such as empty cartons, paper bags and clean plastic containers. These can later be sorted for recycling.

And honestly, this makes a BIG difference when it comes to making your kitchen less attractive to cockroaches.

🥔 Keep an eye on fresh produce
If you keep onions, potatoes or other vegetables in the pantry, check them regularly and remove anything that's starting to spoil. One bad vegetable can quickly become an invitation for unwanted guests.

🧽 Clean regularly
I disinfect and clean the kitchen, appliances and the rest of the home regularly, with a thorough clean at least once a week.

🐜 Use prevention where you can
If you don't like using pesticides inside your home, natural repellents and certain essential oils can sometimes help discourage pests. Peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender and bay leaves are commonly used as household pest deterrents.

⚠️ But sometimes prevention isn't enough.
Depending on where you live, cockroach control may require additional treatment. Here in Myrtle Beach, regular pest treatment can unfortunately be necessary.

I personally prefer to minimise chemical use wherever possible — but I also believe in being practical. A clean, dry, food-secure home is your first line of defence.

The goal isn't to make your home perfect. It's to make it as uninviting as possible to the little creatures you DON'T want sharing it. 😄

What is one kitchen habit that has made the biggest difference in keeping pests away?

CREATE YOUR WORLD — AND WALK IN IT

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”
— Proverbs 18:21

There is something powerful about paying attention to the words we speak — especially the words we speak about ourselves, our circumstances, and our future.

If we constantly say, “I can't,” “Nothing ever works out,” “I'll never get ahead,” we can easily begin living according to those words.

But what happens when we choose words that agree with hope?

“I can take the next step.”

“Things can change.”

“I may not have all the answers, but I can keep going.”

“There is still something good ahead.”

That doesn't mean pretending everything is perfect. It means choosing not to let today's circumstances write the entire story.

One of the messages that has stayed with me from Jesse Duplantis is:

Create your world and walk in it.

What are you speaking into your world today?

Speak life.
Speak hope.
Speak faith.
Then take a step in that direction. ❤️

Some cats want a lap.

Some cats want a box.

And apparently, some cats decide YOU are the furniture. 😂🐾

This was one of our old homestead cats, and clearly I was in exactly the right position for a little afternoon lounging.

I don't remember what I was doing… but apparently it wasn't as important as being a cat bed. 😹

Do your pets ever decide that your personal space belongs to them?

Hi guys, happy Monday!

I thought we can kick off this week with a short story... 😀

There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old r***e and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel but missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining.

A voice spoke to him and said, "Pray first, aim high, and stay focused. However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice said again to him, "I said, 'Pray, aim high, and stay focused." So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree, and shot. The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun, hit the snake in the head, and killed it. And, when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer, and a turkey for his family to eat. The snake was dead simply because the man listened to God.

Moral of the story:
Pray first before you do anything, aim and shoot high in your goals, and stay focused on God. Never let others discourage you concerning your past. The past is exactly that, the past. Do not look to man for your blessings, but look to the doors that only He has prepared in advance for you in your favor. Wait, be still, and patient: keep God first, and everything else will follow.

Have a lovely week my friends! 😀👍
