Here is a tip for the month on pool care.

Pool Care Tip

Did you know that rainwater usually lowers the pH of swimming pool water

Here’s why, in plain terms:

• Rainwater is naturally slightly acidic, typically around pH 5.0–5.6.
• This acidity comes from dissolved carbon dioxide in the air (forming weak carbonic acid).
• In some areas, air pollution can make rain even more acidic.
What that means for your pool
When you get heavy rain:
• The pool pH often drops, especially if the pool wasn’t well-buffered.
• Total Alkalinity (TA) can also decrease, making future pH swings more likely.
• Low pH can lead to:
a. Eye and skin irritation
b. Corrosion of metal fittings
c. Etching of plaster or grout
d. Reduced chlorine effectiveness (in some ranges)

Practical pool-care tip
After significant rainfall:

1. Test pH and alkalinity
2. If pH is below 7.2, add soda ash (sodium carbonate) or pH increaser
3. If alkalinity has dropped, use Alkaline Increaser
