lean and sustainable community. Short-Term Goal: Promptly address and remove unsightly and harmful litter to maintain the aesthetic and environmental quality of Knysna. Medium-Term Goal: Enhance and expand infrastructure for effective waste collection to ensure efficient and comprehensive management of waste. Long-Term Goal: Cultivate a culture of responsible waste disposal through consultation and education, empowering the people of Knysna to take ownership of their environment. By identifying and showcasing the efforts of dedicated individuals and groups, we aim to inspire and mobilize residents, businesses, and organisations. Our goal is to leverage, collaborate, and fully utilize available resources to make a meaningful impact. With the Knysna estuary ranked as South Africa's top spot for biodiversity, preventing litter from roads and streets from reaching our lagoon and ocean is crucial. This proactive approach will help preserve the delicate balance of our natural habitats and protect our rich biodiversity. Revive Hunters North. Good afternoon, everyone. We had a super turnout today 💫 not only were we able to clear up the bed, cut back some of the reeds to maintain a line of sight onto the golf course ⛳ and do the usual clean of Howard, but were able to give Thesen, Lindsay and Hunter's estate drive a good clean with over 8 bags of litter being collected! A big thank you to all involved, couldn't have happened without you🙏🏻

N2, Hospital up to Hornley turnoff
Phantom Pass and Redbridge Road.

Good haul Saturday at Coney Glen, Knysna. Swell 1,2m. Visibility approx.1,5m. Depth -7m. Recovered 147 lead sinkers freediving. Only 1 Spark Plug found, possibly the area, was cleaned before, and these are easy to locate due to their white colour and in abundance. Always feels like the first time someone been there when u explore underwater. Subsea always feel u the first to have been there.🏆

Dam se Bos, Knysna, Nov 2024. No words. Cleaned in 2022. Household wheelie bins and domestic waste services provided by Muni, and yet the area continues to be used as a domestic waste dump site. Contractors were appointed to clean but unable to complete their SOW, reasons unknown? How do we change perceptions to make this better? All litter eventually flows down to the Lagoon.🤷‍♂️🤕🙏🏼

Magdalena and her team, now with the assistance of CWP, in progress of cleaning and preparing the vegetable gardens. For October month, an estimated 50 bags of litter were recovered around the Balie and Klein Street area. Hopefully, this will be duplicated by others. All donations for this worthy cause will be much appreciated 🏆🙏🏻

Contributing to the litter problem of Knysna is the overflowing bins. Actions to alleviate the problem are:

Increase Collection Frequency: Empty bins more often, especially in high-traffic areas and during peak times.

More Bins & Better Placement: Add bins in busy areas and position them for easy access and proper use.

Secure Lids & Better Design: Use bins with secure lids or funnel-style openings to prevent waste from spilling.

Wind Barriers: Place bins in sheltered spots or use barriers to reduce windblown litter.

Street Sweeping & Regular Cleanups: Increase street cleaning, particularly after events or windy weather.

Community Involvement: Organize clean-ups and encourage businesses and locals to maintain cleanliness.

Additional bins have been installed, and the broken ones repaired along Lagoon Drive, from Garden Gates to White Bridge. Stylish and robust new bins are also being introduced along Waterfront Drive. This initiative aims to encourage increased use of the bins and help tackle the litter problem.

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped us stock our shelves! Thanks to your generosity, we’ve been able to buy plenty of tinned food, rice, lentils, and other ingredients for soup mixes, as well as soap, clothing, baby items, toys, and more. 🥫👕🧸

With this recent haul, we can now keep our shelves stocked for a few weeks, ensuring ongoing support for the community. A special shoutout to Claudia Pirker from the German Shop and all our amazing donors—your support makes a world of difference. 🙏💚

Why are there not more initiatives like this in the Knysna area driven by the Communities, Local and Provincial Gov. Where there is a will, there must be a way ?
