One rug category. Different regions. Different names. Different traditions.

They may look similar at first glance, but the terminology tells a deeper story — of construction, origin and craft.

Knowing the difference helps you specify with intention.

Flatweave describes the construction.

Unlike a traditional piled rug, a flatweave is woven without a cut pile, creating a low-profile surface that is often reversible.

Think of flatweave as the broader category — within it sit different regional weaving traditions and techniques.

Kilim describes a weaving tradition.

Associated particularly with Turkey and neighbouring regions across West and Central Asia, kilims are flatwoven textiles recognised for their distinctive weaving techniques, bold geometry and rich regional design language.

Every pattern can carry a sense of place, culture and tradition.

Durrie / Dhurrie has its roots in India.

Traditionally flatwoven in cotton or wool, durries range from beautifully understated stripes and geometric forms to far more intricate patterns.

Like the kilim, the name tells us more than how the rug looks — it connects the piece to a particular textile tradition.

Across the world, you’ll encounter names such as Kelim, Soumak, Sumak and Jajim — terms connected to different regions, constructions and weaving traditions.

Flatweave describes the construction.
Regional names help describe the tradition.

Because in considered interiors, understanding the craft behind an object is part of specifying the design.

Know your rug. Specify with intention.

OKHA Design Studio in collaboration with respected fabricator, Zoya Rugs has released a collection of abstract, geometric rugs influenced by traditional African Tribal Arts.

THE STONE COLLECTION features six different designs in numerous colourways and is woven using a blended twine of bamboo silk and Himalayan wool.

The rugs are a contemporary exploration of a creative heritage that is evident in many genres of African artistic expression; sculpture, carving, beadwork, body adornment.
