Pool safety isn’t optional; it’s essential behaviour for every pool owner. This World Drowning Prevention Day, take action and put prevention first.
Pool safety is now regulated under SANS 10134, the recommended standard for swimming pools. It is an important SABS Standard that guides pool owners on securing a pool area, and every homeowner is responsible for understanding and complying with this regulation. Together, these are the kind of actions that lower drowning statistics, and we urge you not to overlook pool safety this winter.
5 tips to avoid a tragedy
1. Cover the pool immediately after swimming. Use a solid safety cover like the PowerPlastics Safety Cover to seal off the water as soon as the pool is not in use.
2. Never leave children unsupervised. Always have an adult actively watching children outdoors. Increase supervision when multiple children are in the pool. This is a critical layer of safety.
3. Learn what drowning really looks like. It’s often silent. No splashing, no shouting. In fact, a child may look like they are simply treading water or standing still.
4. Learn CPR. Ensure adults in the home are CPR-trained and confident swimmers.
5. Act fast in an emergency. Start CPR as soon as you reach the child and continue without stopping until emergency services arrive. It makes a big difference to the outcome of a near-drowning
