Pulling the window AC units this weekend? Go slow on the first one.

Paper wasp queens and lady beetles like to tuck into the fins and housing of window units in the fall, looking for a dry spot to wait out the winter. Carry the unit into a warm room and they start moving.

What we tell neighbors from Worcester to Hooksett:
- Pull units on a cool morning, when anything inside is sluggish.
- Set the unit down outside first and look over the back and sides before you bring it in.
- Store it covered in the garage or shed instead of a closet in the living space.

Find a nest tucked in the window frame or up under the eaves? We take care of wasps. Colonial is founder-owned and independently operated since 1984, with local techs in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Get a free quote at 800-525-8084.

Filling the bird feeders again now that the leaves are down? Take a look at where the seed bag lives.

A torn bag of birdseed in the garage or down cellar is about the best thing a mouse can find in late October. It's also where a lot of those little pantry moths (Indian meal moths) get their start before they show up in the kitchen around Thanksgiving.

Easy fixes:
- Move the seed into a metal can with a tight lid. Mice will chew right through a plastic bin.
- Keep it up off the floor and away from the foundation wall.
- Rake up the spilled seed under the feeders so it doesn't pile up by the steps.

If the mice already found it, give us a call. Gold includes callbacks for covered pests like mice, at no extra charge, and our local techs know the stone foundations and old sills around here. Colonial Pest Control, founder-owned and independently operated since 1984. 800-525-8084

First fire of the season this week? Before you haul an armload of wood into the mudroom, give each piece a knock and a look.

Split wood that sat stacked all summer is home to spiders, carpenter ants, and the odd wood-boring beetle. Bring it into a warm house and they wake up.

A few habits that help:
- Keep the main woodpile off the ground and at least 20 feet from the house, not leaned up against the clapboards.
- Bring in a day or two's worth at a time, not a week's.
- Set aside any pieces with fresh sawdust around them or tunnels in the wood, and burn those first.

Seeing big black ants inside once the heat's on? That's worth a call. Colonial is founder-owned and independently operated since 1984, and our techs live and work right here in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Get a free quote at 800-525-8084.

Pulling the wool sweaters and blankets out of the cedar chest this weekend? Look for small, irregular holes, tiny tube-shaped cases, or crusty bits along the seams. That's clothes moth damage, and it usually starts in a closet or storage bin nobody has opened since spring. Wash or dry-clean anything you plan to store again, vacuum the closet floor and corners, and keep stored wool in sealed bins. If you're still finding holes, Colonial can do a clothes moth inspection and track down where they're coming from. Founder-owned and independently operated since 1984. Getting a few slow, clumsy flies on the sunny side of the house on these warm October afternoons? Those are probably cluster flies. They spent the summer in the lawn, then crawled into the siding and attic to wait out the winter. On a warm day they wake up and head for the windows. Swatting them just leaves a mess on the sill, so grab the vacuum and empty it outside. If they come back every fall, give our local techs a call and we'll tell you when a treatment actually does some good. Popped the hood lately? This time of year it happens a lot around Worcester County and southern NH: a mouse nest on top of the engine, shredded insulation, or chewed wiring that turns into a big repair bill. Attached garages are warm, and mice get in under a worn door seal or through gaps where the wall meets the slab. Keep birdseed, grass seed, and dog food in metal cans with tight lids, and check the rubber seal at the bottom of the garage door. If they're already in the garage, our techs find how they're getting in and seal it up. Founder-owned and independently operated since 1984. Tick season doesn't end when the leaves turn. Adult deer ticks (blacklegged ticks) are very active in October and November around here, and they'll be out on any day the temperature gets above freezing.

Raking leaves, splitting wood, cleaning out garden beds, and walking the dog along an old stone wall all put you right where they're waiting.

Some easy habits for fall yard work:
- Tuck your pants into your socks before you head out
- Do a full tick check when you come in, especially behind the knees, at the waistband, and along the hairline
- Toss work clothes in the dryer on high for 10 minutes before washing them
- Check the dog too, and ask your vet about tick prevention

For our Massachusetts customers, the Platinum program adds targeted tick treatments to your regular service. Fall is a good time to get started, before adult ticks settle into the leaf litter for winter.

Sunny October afternoon, and the south side of the house is covered in stink bugs. Or it's cluster flies buzzing on the upstairs windows, or boxelder bugs lined up on the deck rail.

They all want the same thing right now: a warm, dry place to wait out the winter, and your attic and wall voids fit the bill. They won't breed in there over the winter. The trouble comes on a warm day in February or March, when they wake up and wander into the living room.

What you can do right now:
- Patch torn window screens and check the screens on attic and gable vents
- Pull window AC units once the weather turns, since they leave easy gaps
- Vacuum the ones that get inside instead of squashing them (the stink bug smell is no joke)

Timing is the big thing with these. An exterior treatment does the most good before they've moved inside, and here in Massachusetts and New Hampshire that window is closing fast.

First cold nights of the year, and the calls start coming in from Worcester County up through the Merrimack Valley. Scratching in the walls at night. Droppings under the kitchen sink. A chewed-open bag of birdseed down cellar.

A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime. Older New England houses, especially ones with stone foundations, have plenty of those: where the oil line comes through, around the dryer vent, along the sill plate, and under the bulkhead.

A few things to do this week:
- Walk the foundation with a flashlight and look for daylight, gnaw marks, and greasy rub marks
- Move birdseed, grass seed, and pet food into metal or heavy plastic bins
- Stack firewood off the ground and away from the house
- Put a sweep on the door between the garage and the mudroom

If you're already hearing them, traps alone usually won't solve it. Our techs find where they're getting in and seal those entry points as part of the job.

If you’re already seeing mice, stink bugs, or busy spiders, don’t wait for the first frost.

Fall is when New England homes get “locked in” for winter pest pressure. An inspection now is cheaper than a midwinter scramble.
