Apparently it’s fall now. The pool knows. 🍂

We finally have highs in the 80s instead of “feels like the surface of the sun,” and I am personally very grateful. 😄

The downside?

It has also been WINDY. Leaves, twigs, pollen and assorted mystery objects are finding their way into pools faster than usual. Add almost-daily rain, and your pool has a lot going on even if nobody is swimming.

This is one of those times of year when skimmer and pump baskets can fill faster than you expect, and all that debris gives the filtration system and sanitizer extra work to do.

So if you walk outside and your pool suddenly looks like the trees had a meeting and chose your backyard... it probably isn’t just you.

Florida fall has arrived.

A good service relationship works both ways.

We talk a lot about what customers should expect from a good pool company.
Show up. Do the work you promised. Take care of the pool. Communicate when something is wrong. Treat the homeowner and their property with respect. Absolutely.

But there’s another side to a small service business that people may not always think about.

We have weekly expenses too. Chemicals, fuel, insurance, equipment, repairs, vehicles and the time it takes to provide service all continue whether an invoice has been paid yet or not.

When an account falls significantly behind and then additional repair work is requested, that puts a small business in a difficult position. The repair may require more labor, parts purchased upfront and another trip to the property while the regular service is still unpaid.

We genuinely want to take care of our customers.

And the easiest relationships are the ones where both sides take care of each other.
We show up and do what we said we would do. You keep your account current. Then, when something unexpected happens with the pool, we’re in a much better position to help get it taken care of. Pretty simple.

Good customers and good service companies make a pretty great team. 😊

Sometimes the diagnosis IS the service.

Here’s something small service businesses run into more often than you might think. A homeowner has a pool problem, so a service professional drives to the house, inspects the equipment, troubleshoots the system and figures out exactly what has failed.

Now the homeowner knows the part they need. They order it online and install it themselves, or have somebody else install it for less.

And that is absolutely their choice. But the part that made the cheaper repair possible was the diagnosis. Someone brought the years of experience needed to figure out what was wrong in the first place.

That’s why troubleshooting and repair estimates involving diagnosis aren’t always free. A pool professional has expenses before a wrench ever comes out of the truck: the vehicle, fuel, insurance, tools, training and, of course, time.

But the biggest thing being provided is knowledge.

You’re welcome to decide what you want to do once you have the answer.

We just have to charge fairly for helping you get the answer. 😊

“Why do you charge to come look at it?”

This is a question we completely understand, especially when you don’t know yet whether the repair will be big or small. But there’s a difference between a simple estimate and troubleshooting a pool problem.

If you tell us exactly what you want installed, we can price a known job.

If you tell us, “The pump isn’t working,” “The heater won’t start,” or “Something is leaking,” somebody first has to figure out why. That means travel time, gas, time at your home and, most importantly, the knowledge and experience to diagnose the problem. Sometimes that diagnosis takes an hour. Sometimes an experienced pool professional looks at something and knows fairly quickly what is wrong.

The fact that it took 15 minutes doesn’t make the knowledge less valuable. In fact, that’s usually what experience looks like. 😄 Once you know which part failed and what needs to be done, you have something very useful: an answer. That’s why we charge for diagnostic visits.

You’re not paying someone just to “come look.” You’re paying them to know what they’re looking at.

Have you spent another summer saying, “We really should get a pool heater someday”? Someday may have arrived. 😄

This is the part of the year when a heater can make a huge difference in how much you actually use your pool. Florida gives us some gorgeous fall and winter days. Sunshine, blue skies, temperatures in the 70s and 80s... And pool water that says, “Absolutely not.” 😂

Adding a heater can help turn those nice-weather days into actual swimming days instead of standing-by-the-pool-thinking-about-swimming days.

The right setup depends on your pool, your equipment, how warm you like the water and how you plan to use it. Some homeowners want to maintain a comfortable temperature for longer stretches. Others just want the ability to warm things up when company is coming or the grandkids decide it is a pool day.

If you have been considering a heater, this is a great time to talk about the options before the first truly chilly morning reminds everybody else at the exact same time.

Because in Florida, pool season does not really end...Sometimes it just needs a little assistance. 😄

Repair it or replace it?

That is one of the big questions we start getting this time of year. Maybe the heater will not start. Maybe it starts, but does not seem to be heating the way it used to. Maybe it is making noises you do not remember hearing before.
Or maybe it has been sitting outside in Florida weather for a very long time and is beginning to look like it has stories to tell. 😄

Sometimes a heater problem is absolutely worth repairing.

Sometimes the unit is older, corrosion is setting in, parts are becoming harder to find, or the repair cost starts getting close enough to replacement that it makes sense to look at both options.

The important thing is not to assume every heater problem means, “Buy a new one.”

It may not.

We would rather look at what is actually happening, the age and condition of the unit, and the cost of the repair before deciding what makes the most sense. Because nobody wants to replace a heater that still has good life left in it. But nobody wants to keep feeding money into one that is trying very hard to retire either. 😂

Florida has finally cooled down to the 80s. We survived. 😂

And after months of “feels like 110,” this weather is glorious.

There is just one tiny problem.

The pool water noticed too.

This is the time of year when we start hearing, “Why does the pool suddenly feel so cold?” followed very quickly by, “Can you look at our heater?”

Yep. Heater season has arrived.

For most of the summer, the pool gets plenty of help from the sun. Once the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, that water temperature starts dropping faster than people expect.

So if you have a heater that has been sitting quietly all summer, now is a good time to make sure it is ready to work when you want it.

Because standing beside a beautiful Florida pool on an 82-degree afternoon while nobody wants to get in is just rude. 😄

There is probably a valve on your pool equipment that nobody has turned in years.
It knows who it is. 😂

Pool systems have valves that control where water flows, and some of them may sit in the same position for a very long time. The problem is that parts sitting outside in the Florida weather do not always enjoy being ignored forever.

Valves can become stiff. Handles can weaken. Seals can age. Fittings can corrode. And the day you finally need something to move is a terrible time to discover that it no longer wants to.

This is why routine equipment checks matter even when everything seems to be working perfectly. Most pool equipment problems do not wake up one morning and announce themselves with a formal letter.

They usually start small.
A drip.
A little corrosion.
A strange noise.
A valve getting harder to turn.
A crack that was not there last year.

Paying attention to the boring little stuff around the pool can save you from some very exciting repair bills later.

And when it comes to pool equipment, boring is good. 😄

When was the last time you actually LOOKED at your pool equipment pad?

Not walked past it.
Not heard it running.
Actually looked at it. 😄

Pool equipment lives outside in Florida heat, rain and humidity, so fittings, connections, pipes and metal components can all show signs of wear over time.
A little rust, a tiny drip or some corrosion around a connection may not seem urgent, but those are exactly the kinds of things worth noticing early.

Look for water where there should not be water.

Listen for sounds that suddenly seem different.

Notice rust, corrosion, loose fittings or anything that simply looks different than it did before.

You do not have to know what every piece of equipment does. That’s our job.
But spotting a change early can sometimes keep a small repair from becoming a much bigger one.

And then there are the valves. Oh, the valves. Tomorrow we need to talk about that one valve nobody has touched since approximately 2022. 😂

That little crack in the pool deck? Keep an eye on it.

Most pool owners pay attention to the water first, which makes sense. If the pool is blue and sparkling, life is good. 😄 But the deck around the pool is quietly taking a beating from sun, heat, rain, ground movement and years of use. A small crack may stay small for a long time. Or it may start widening, lifting or creating an uneven spot that becomes more than just cosmetic.

This is one of those things that is easy to walk past every day and think, “I’ll deal with that eventually.” Eventually has a funny way of getting more expensive. 😂

Take a walk around your pool every now and then and actually look at the deck. Watch for cracks that are growing, areas that are lifting, loose material or spots where water seems to collect.

Your pool is more than the water in the middle.

Tomorrow, we’re heading over to the equipment pad, where some very important things live that almost nobody looks at until something stops working.
