I stop at the same convenience store for coffee several mornings a week, and I’ve been going there for years. Everyone has always been friendly… until recently.
For the last couple of months there’s been a newer cashier who never looks up or says, “Good morning,” “Hello,” or “Have a great day.” I always leave feeling like I’m an inconvenience.
Last week I wanted to buy $100 in gift cards and couldn’t find them. I asked where they were, and he just kept pointing instead of showing me, even though we were the only two people in the store. When he finally came over, we realized they were out of stock. I asked when they’d get more.
“I don’t know. Check back later this week.”
Today, while I was pumping gas, the manager came outside, so I politely mentioned it. I simply said he makes me feel unwelcome when he’s working and asked if she’d encourage him to greet customers.
Her response?
“He’s a nice guy. He’s just not a morning person.”
I laughed and said, “Then put him on afternoons.” 😂
What bothered me most wasn’t the cashier. It was how quickly my concern was dismissed.
As a business owner, I know how hard it is to find and keep great employees. But if a client tells me someone on my team made them feel unwelcome, I’m going to listen. I’m going to thank them for telling me and I’m going to use that feedback for coaching.
Customer service should NEVER leave someone feeling like they’re an inconvenience. We all have bad days, but kindness and professionalism are your job.
People may forget what they bought or what they paid, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel.
