🏈 BEE WEEK: What's That Big Gray Football in the Tree? 🏈
Meet the bald-faced hornet nest — one of nature's most impressive (and intimidating) pieces of architecture.

This beauty was hiding in a shrub, and check out the details:
📄 That's real PAPER. Bald-faced hornets chew up wood fibers from fences, decks, and dead trees, mix it with saliva, and build these swirled walls layer by layer. Each different shade of gray? A different wood source. It's basically a house made of hornet papier-mâché.

🏠 A nest this size took an ENTIRE season to build and housed several hundred hornets at its peak — each one able to sting multiple times, and all of them very serious about home defense.

❄️ Here's the part most people don't know: bald-faced hornets abandon their nest every year. When hard frost hits, the colony dies off, and only the new queens survive by sheltering elsewhere. They never reuse an old nest.

⚠️ So when is it safe to grab one like this? AFTER a hard freeze — not before. That gray football in July or August is fully loaded and absolutely not a DIY project. The nest that's harmless in November will put you in urgent care in August.
