Infidelity: Why and how.

It's hard to think when infidelity darkens your marriage.
You feel betrayed, trust is broken, and forgiveness seems impossible. Our emotions are in chaos.

I offer that infidelity is a symptom, not a cause.

Then, the relevant question then is "A symptom of what?"

At Marriage and Communication, we will do the work to uncover the answer.

Together, with mutual awareness, insights, new clarity, and effective communication skills, the time will arrive, and you will know whether it's possible to forgive or time move on.

My guarantee is that you will know:

1) Why infidelity occurs.
2) How this happened to you. 3) What is next for your relationship.
You will have all you need to make a choice, and you will be complete with your choice.

I look forward to working with you and your partner when the time is appropriate.

Blessings on your journey.

Dear parents blessed with children,

We get to be parents.

"Get to parents "Get to raise "Get to" children who grow up become "Get to" adults who will be "Get to" future parents when it's their turn to be parents.

As contrasted with "Have to, Need to and Should" living parents who "Have to, Need to and Should" to survive their marriages, lives and living.

Who tend to live dissatisfied unfulfilling lives given by substance abuse, addictions, domestic abuse, and violence and who tend to lack effective loving relationships and communication skills.

These parents tend to raise their children in a world where children wake to hear, "You have to get up. You need to get dressed. You should be nice to your sister. You have to eat before you have to get on the school bus which will take you to school where you need to learn, and have to pay attention to your teachers."

And so on.

I invite you and I to substitute "Get to" for every "Got to" in the statements above and experience the difference that simple substitution makes in the quality of our lives and living.

Why are so many marriages struggling and failing?

1) Missing Fourth R (Relationships and communication skills) in our school curriculum

2) Poor relationship and communication skills in our families of origin.

We graduate our children without the skills that would help them get along with those who will hire them, work alongside them, or marry and create families with them.

A train wreck straight ahead.

What's in a memory?

Memories are made up of feelings and stories (our interpretations of our past experiences).

Put feelings snd stories together, and we have memories held together by unexpressed emotions.

Our past is not in the past; it's out there on the shelf waiting to be processed and then filed in the past as a recording.

This is why we hear ourselves bringing up the past, wondering why we continue to do so.

Until we've processed the past and release the emotions holding our memories together, they will remain stuck out there in our future, influencing our present life experience until we do so.

Blessing and communication.

We've read earlier of the power of "Yes, and" as a means of helping us move from reactive "NOs" and BUTs" to calmer, more responsive productive spaces of "Yes, and..."

For example, one can follow a, "Yes, and" in a variety of ways such as, "Yes, and tell me more." "Yes, and can I share with you how I heard that...?" "Yes, and is there something we need to work out together?" and so forth. All these are respectful replies, honoring all parties.

Recently I've uncovered an uncommonly powerful approach that will convey you and your partner, spouse, or child into to a high connected space.

Most especially if you are seeking to emerge from a disconnected, negative, stuck place.

What would it be like if one of you said something like the following:
1) "My Blessing for us is that we find our way into a loving place in which both of us are honored and respected. Can we do that?"
2) Or, "My Blessing for us is that we find our way back to the love we both shared not so long ago. Will you join with me to get us back there once more?"

Basically, with this "Blessing invitation" approach both of you can reboot your relationship, gracefully.

Will it work every time? Likely not. It certainly will open something up that wasn't present before.

Try it out for yourself and let me know how it went.

My Blessing for us is that we find our way to a society that communicates with mutual honor, respect and love.

The Power of "You're Welcome."

What is the difference between:
"Thank you. You're welcome."
"Thank you. No problem?"

With "Thank you. You're welcome.'
We are expressing gratitude and acknowledgment of a choice made on behalf of the recipient of that action.

In the moment of "You're welcome," there is the experience of a palpable, pleasurable life connection established in the moment of declaring“You're welcome.“

When coaching couples on marriage and communication, in the moment of "You're welcome," they inevitably begin to lighten up: their energy shifts, we feel connected, smiles break out, sometimes giggling and laughing.

As contrasted with the noticeable lack of life connection when the response was:
"No problem. Uh-huh. Think nothing of it, No worries, No big deal."
Or receiving a shoulder shrug - or no response at all.

It is as if, in the absence of "You're welcome," they are declaring, "You don't owe me anything for the actions I have taken on behalf of our relationship." The experience of a mutually enjoyable and gratifying, life-affirming expression of mutual life and vitality is completely absent.

Why would you, or anybody, choose to respond with "No problem" when you or I could just as easily respond with "You're welcome?"

Thank you for reading this.
You're welcome?

What do marriages and sandwiches have in common?

There can be is no sandwich without something in between two slices of bread.

There can be no marriage without something in between two individuals.

"And" is the cheese, the peanut butter.

Adding "And," a new and exciting future arises.

Marriage and Communication

Without "And" nothing would have happened, nothing would have changed.

In the moment of "And" two individuals connect and became a couple.

Adding "Communication" they became a "Marriage."

The moment "And" connected two individuals they became a family.

There is no sandwich without something in between two slices of bread.

There is no marriage without something in between two individuals.

Marriage and Communication.

Yum!

Life is now.
Avoid later-ing your marriage.

As children, we heard our parents say "Later. Not now. After dinner, talk to your father."

We came to understand that, whatever we wanted, "Is not going to happen." We became resigned to "Later. Not now."

Years later, as adults we noticed "later-ing" in our relationships.

"Not now. Later. Let's talk about it on the weekend, in a few weeks, after payday, at Christmas time. It costs too much. Let's wait until we have enough money, time or opportunity."

Overtime, we begin to notice our relationship weakens and become faded.

Arguments multiply and remain unresolved. Silence grows and lasts longer. There is no follow up or follow through. We make promises to change that no one keeps.

We want to talk with our partner, to work out problems, to express our feelings. Perhaps one of us invites us to get counseling or coaching to heal and restore our marriage to what it once was.

And then we hear " No not now, later. Let's talk about it after dinner, tomorrow, or on the weekend.

Just like our experience as children, we get stuck in the cycle of routinely "later-ing" one another.

Your marriage is now.
Life is now. Not later.

I invite us to take the steps to resolve the issues that have arisen between us and avoid " later - ing" one another.

Get going now, not later.
The future of marriage depends on it.
