Kansas Active Transportation/Safe Routes to School team members attending and presenting at the 2026 Safe Routes to School National Conference in Minneapolis.
The lunch keynote was Tom Flood of Rovelo Creative who creates common sense messages and media to bring to light the reality of a transportation system that is not safe for people walking and biking, especially children.

Strange how so many will shame people on bikes for not wearing helmets yet don’t have much to say about bike lanes without protection.

The Kansas Safe Routes to School Team is on the road! Between September and November, our Planning and Programming Grants staff are visiting Garden City, Newton, Liberal, and Coffeyville, conducting field work and community outreach to help identify issues for students walking, biking, and rolling to school.

The information we gather will be used in the coming months to develop project recommendations and design concepts for each community.

We’re having a great time meeting with residents and students, and we've learned so much by observing drop-off and pick-up at schools. Thank you to each community for helping us make the most of our site visits. Be sure to say hi if you see us around!

If you love trails and want more, plan to attend this free event that will be jam packed with valuable information and fun activities! Event location also has ample bike parking and trails galore to take advantage of!

The KDOT Active Transportation Program will also be there presenting on how Transportation Alternatives funds support trails across Kansas.

Yesterday was Kansas Walk and Roll to School Day, and we just have to say 😍 WOW 😍

Students all over the state showed up on bikes, scooters, boards, sneakers, and more, showing their love for active transportation and for their school community. Way to go, Kansas!

Go the extra mile and use our Walking School Bus resources to encourage families to walk together in groups. Key characteristics of a walking school bus include:

👣A designated route

📍 Scheduled “stops” along the route

👮Supervision by one or more trained adults
