PSA: please do not waste your money on products that claim to repel frogs and toads (or snakes, for that matter). First, there is no evidence they are effective. Second, they don’t differentiate between species and harm all species equally. Third, there is no way to know just how much harm these compounds cause across the ecological spectrum.

Our first official on-call removal! This guy was hanging out under a water table, and who can blame him? Free water, cool shade, and probably plenty of mosquitoes to snack on. We removed him from the gene pool by treating him with benzocaine and sending him to freezer camp.

ID tips: check out his triangular parotid glands behind the tympanic membrane. Native toads’ glands are smaller, higher, and bean-shaped. The head is flat between the ocular ridges, unlike the southern toad which has “crests” or, as I like to call them, toad antlers 😝😛 Think you have a cane toad? ❤️ NOT a cane toad 🍄
Native southern toads often have vibrant patterns, but not always. This very muted olive green guy is definitely a native toad. Can you see his “antlers”? Another hint is the shape and position of the parotid glands - small oval/kidney bean shaped compared with the large triangular glands of cane toads. They are also higher on the back and closer together than a cane toad’s.
