QUESTION WE GET A LOT: “What’s the difference between a wasp and a yellowjacket?”

Great question — all yellowjackets ARE wasps, but not all wasps are yellowjackets. Here’s a quick breakdown:

PAPER WASPS: Long legs, slender body, open-comb nests that hang from eaves. Generally less aggressive unless you disturb their nest.

YELLOWJACKETS: Stocky body, bright yellow and black stripes, often nest underground or inside walls. Very aggressive, especially in late summer.

BALD-FACED HORNETS: Black and white, build large football-shaped nests in trees and on structures. Extremely defensive of their nest.

All three are common in our area, and all three require professional removal when nests are established. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, send us a photo and we’ll ID it for you.
