This is the time of year when the kitchen becomes ant headquarters. As the weather cools and the rain moves in, ants that spent the summer happily outside start looking for somewhere drier and warmer, and your countertops fit the bill perfectly.

What you're usually seeing are odorous house ants, the little dark ones most people call sugar ants, though pavement ants and the grease-loving species turn up too. They follow scent trails, which is why you tend to see a line of them rather than one or two strays. Wiping down the ones you can see doesn't do much about the colony behind the wall, and unfortunately the spray cans often make it worse by splitting that colony into several new nests that turn up in different spots a week later.

Sealing the entry points matters just as much as treating the ants themselves, so we start by finding where they're actually getting in, deal with the colony, and then close those openings off.

In the meantime, a few things help on your end. Keep the counters and floors clear of crumbs and sticky spills, store cereal, sugar, and pet food in airtight containers, take the trash out before it sits overnight, and fix any dripping faucet, since that moisture is a big part of what draws them in.

Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is. They hitch a ride in on luggage, secondhand furniture, and backpacks, and they'll settle into a spotless house just as happily as any other.

That's part of why they're so easy to miss. Bites tend to show up in clusters or little lines, most often on arms, legs, and neck, while the bugs themselves hide in mattress seams, along bed frames and headboards, behind baseboards, and in the folds of couches and recliners. You might notice tiny black spots on the sheets, shed skins, or pale rice-sized eggs tucked into cracks. In heavier infestations there's a faint musty odor.

If any of that sounds familiar, an inspection is the fastest way to know for sure, because bites alone aren't enough to confirm it. Once we know what we're dealing with and how far it's spread, we treat the spots where they're actually hiding and the routes they travel, then follow up, since bed bugs are rarely resolved in a single visit. Most people don't need to throw out their mattress or furniture, which is usually the first thing everyone assumes.
