🌴 Wednesday FAQ: "Do bugs take the winter off down here?" 🤔

We hear this one a lot this time of year... and the honest answer is NOPE! 😎🪳

Up north, the cold knocks bugs back for months. Here on the Treasure Coast and Space Coast, our "winter" is more like a long weekend. When the nights finally cool off, roaches, ants, spiders and even rodents don't disappear. They just start looking for a warm, cozy spot... and your house is a pretty good one!

And on those 80-degree days in December? Yep, the mosquitoes are still out there too. 🦟

That's why we keep our quarterly exterior pest spray going all year long, so the barrier around your home never takes a vacation either.

New customers get their first pest service for just $49, inside AND out, and quotes are always free. We can usually get you started within the week! 👮‍♂️

🐛🚗 Millipede March is ON! Found a few curled-up little "C"s on the garage floor or the pool deck lately? You're not alone.

After our damp fall days, millipedes leave the soggy mulch and go looking for higher ground... which is usually your garage, lanai, or front entry. They don't bite or sting, but nobody wants to sweep up dozens every morning. 😅

Send them marching back out:
🚪 Replace worn garage door seals and door sweeps
🌿 Rake mulch and leaves back about 6 inches from the foundation
💧 Fix leaky spigots and point sprinklers away from the house
💡 Switch outdoor lights to yellow bulbs (fewer bugs at the door)
🧹 Sweep up strays and toss them outside, no need to squish

Still seeing a parade? Our quarterly exterior pest spray puts a barrier around the whole house. Halo's Pest Arrest is local in Sebastian, and new customers get their first pest service for just $49, inside AND out. Quotes are always free! 👮‍♂️

🔎 Tuesday Trivia: You're sitting on the porch at sunset, you get bitten a dozen times... and you never see a single bug. What got you? 🤔

Answer: NO-SEE-UMS! 🦟

These tiny biting midges are about the size of a pinhead, and living near the Indian River Lagoon, we've got plenty of them. A few fun (okay, itchy) facts:
🌅 They're most active at dawn and dusk, especially on calm, still evenings
🌊 They breed in the damp muck around marshes, mangroves, and lagoon edges
🪟 They're small enough to slip right through regular window screens
💨 They're weak fliers, so a ceiling fan or patio fan really helps keep them off you

Have you ever been "eaten alive" by something you couldn't see? Tell us your worst no-see-um story below! 👇

📦🪳 Ding-dong! Your package is here... and it might've brought a plus-one.

With holiday shopping kicking off, a lot more boxes are landing on porches around the Treasure Coast and Space Coast. Roaches LOVE cardboard: it's dark, it's warm, and the glue is basically a snack. Sometimes they (or their egg cases) ride right into your kitchen. 😬

Keep the hitchhikers out:
📦 Unbox in the garage or on the porch, not the kitchen counter
♻️ Break down and recycle cardboard the same day
🛍️ Give grocery bags and paper bags a quick shake before putting them away
🚫 Don't stash empty boxes in closets, pantries, or under the sink
👀 Spotted one inside already? Where there's one, there are usually friends

👀🐝 Quick Monday challenge: step outside and LOOK UP! Those little gray, umbrella-shaped nests tucked under your eaves, lanai ceiling, or shutters? That's paper wasp real estate, and fall is when the colonies are at their biggest here on the Treasure Coast and Space Coast.

Paper wasps aren't out to get you, but bump a nest while you're hanging Halloween decorations or opening the grill and they WILL defend it. 😬

Wasp-smart tips:
🔍 Do a quick walk-around once a week, checking eaves, lanai corners, shutters, door frames, and under the porch rail
🔥 Peek under grill covers, mailboxes, and kids' play sets before you use them
🚫 Don't swat, and don't knock nests down with a broom, since that's how stings happen
🌅 Early morning is when they're calmest, so that's the time to keep an eye on things
⚠️ Allergic to stings, or the nest is big or up high? Leave it to the pros!

Halo's Pest Arrest is local in Sebastian, and we're happy to take care of it for you. New customers get their first pest service for just $49, and quotes are always free! 👮‍♂️

🦗⛏️ Does your lawn feel squishy when you walk on it? Seeing brown, thin patches that just won't green up? You might have MOLE CRICKETS throwing an underground party in your yard!

These little diggers have shovel-shaped front legs and tunnel just under the surface, chewing grass roots and loosening the soil as they go. Fall is when the damage really shows up here on the Treasure Coast and Space Coast. Bonus clue: if birds or raccoons keep tearing up the same spot, they're probably hunting mole crickets for breakfast. 🦝

Sunday lawn check:
🧼 Soap flush test: mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a gallon of water, pour it on a 2x2 ft spot at the edge of a brown patch, and watch for crickets popping up within a few minutes
💧 Water early in the morning, not every night, since soggy soil keeps them close to the surface
✂️ Mow high so the grass can hold its own
🌱 Go easy on the fertilizer, because stressed, overfed grass is a buffet

Found 2 to 4 or more in one spot? Time to call in the pros! Halo's Pest Arrest is local in Sebastian and our lawn spray program keeps lawn pests in check all year. Quotes are always free! 👮‍♂️

🦇🌕 SPOOKY SATURDAY FACT: Bats are the good guys! 🌕🦇

With Halloween a week away, bats are showing up on every porch decoration in town. But the real ones flying over Sebastian, Vero and Palm Bay at dusk are some of the best bug control around! 🙌

A single bat can eat hundreds of night-flying insects in one evening, and mosquitoes are on the menu. 🦟😋

A few quick bat facts for Florida neighbors:
🌙 They come out around dusk to hunt bugs over ponds, canals and backyards
🛡️ Bats are protected in Florida, so never try to harm them
🏠 If one gets inside, keep pets and kids away and call a licensed wildlife pro
🦇 A bat house on a tall pole is a fun way to invite more bug-eaters to the neighborhood

Bats can't catch them all, though! For the mosquitoes that sneak past, Halo's Pest Arrest offers monthly mosquito misting, and quotes are always free. 👮‍♂️

👻🐜 BOO! Those tiny see-through ants on your counter are GHOST ANTS, and they're one of Florida's sneakiest kitchen crashers!

They're so small and pale you only notice their little dark heads marching single file toward the sugar, the sink, or the dog bowl. And here's the plot twist: grabbing a can of store-bought bug spray can actually make it worse. Ghost ants often split into new colonies when they feel attacked, so one trail can turn into three! 😱

Saturday ghost ant tips:
🧽 Wipe trails with soapy water to erase their scent highway
🍯 Seal up sweets, syrups and pet food in tight containers
💧 Fix drippy faucets and wipe the sink dry at night (they love moisture)
🌿 Trim branches and shrubs touching the house, since that's their bridge inside
🚫 Skip the repellent spray on the trail itself
