Saltwater pools are popular—and often misunderstood.

A saltwater system uses salt and a generator to produce chlorine continuously. Many swimmers enjoy the softer-feeling water and reduced traditional chlorine odor, but the pool still needs regular testing, cleaning and equipment care.

The rain arrives, the patio furniture moves three feet by itself—and suddenly your pool water does not look quite as cheerful.

Heavy Florida rain can dilute pool chemicals, introduce dirt and organic debris, raise the water level and affect the pool’s pH and sanitizer balance. Wind may also deliver leaves, pollen and half the neighborhood’s landscaping directly into the water.

After a major storm:

⛈️ Remove large debris
⛈️ Empty skimmer and pump baskets
⛈️ Check the water level
⛈️ Test and rebalance the water
⛈️ Make sure circulation is working correctly
⛈️ Watch for cloudiness or early algae growth

Avoid adding random amounts of chemicals without testing first. Pool chemistry is less “season to taste” and more “measure carefully.”

Once a month? Whenever it starts looking suspicious? Five minutes before guests arrive?

For most Florida pools, weekly professional care is the best way to keep the water clear, balanced and ready to enjoy. Our heat, humidity, afternoon storms, pollen and year-round swimming season can change pool conditions surprisingly quickly.

Regular service typically includes checking and balancing the water, emptying baskets, brushing surfaces, inspecting equipment and removing debris. Some pools may need extra attention after:

🌴 Heavy rain or strong winds
🏊 A busy pool party
🍃 Large amounts of leaves or pollen

The dog has already claimed the best pool float… but is swimming in a chlorinated pool actually safe for pets?

For most healthy dogs, an occasional supervised swim in a properly balanced pool is usually fine. Cats can swim too—although many would prefer to supervise from a safe distance while silently judging everyone.

A few sensible precautions make pool time safer:

🐾 Always provide an easy way out, such as steps or a pet ramp
🐾 Never leave a pet unattended near the water
🐾 Discourage them from drinking pool water
🐾 Rinse their coat with fresh water after swimming
🐾 Dry their ears thoroughly, especially floppy-eared dogs
🐾 Keep pool chemicals securely stored away

Not every pet is a natural swimmer, so let them set the pace. A life jacket can also help nervous, older or inexperienced dogs.
