Hope, Horses & Kids Hope, Horses & Kids provides affordable access to horses for youth of all ages and abilities

HHK can tailor any program around the specific needs of a child, including special needs requiring dramatic assistance. Programs include a non-riding curriculum (safety, care and feeding, cleaning paddocks, grooming etc.), as well as longer, more academic-based structure that include horsemanship in three skill levels. There is also a planned vocational program that exposes kids to careers in the fields of veterinary science, horseshoeing, riding instruction, horse training and more.

The benefits of the human-animal relationship are immense, and we aim to provide a safe space for youth to enjoy, disconnect from screens and connect with one another and nature 🌄 This is what our future generations need more of.

One way you can support our mission is to come to our annual fundraiser dinner The Hootenanny. This year it will take place at the Rancho Cielo campus on September 12th. Our back to school booster Horse Powered Reading®️and Horse Powered Math®️ camp was a wonderful way to kick start these students brains into gear, all while making new friends and having a lot of fun. Activities included the road to reading, where we discussed challenges some young reader have, then we built ‘ranches’ for our Pony Express alphabetizing game. Next was some quiet storytime with Bacon and Woolly (Ellie the pot belly and Dutch stood in as the main characters in the story 😂). A little math racing game brought the energy back up later on followed by a brilliant activity where kids name challenges that they have while getting ready for school in the mornings - getting out of bed was mentioned more than once!! 🫪
We had such a great day and will be bringing more HPR®️specific camps to the barn!

Our final day of camp 4 was all fun and games!! We began with Ranch Ninja Warrior 🥷- kids went twice and raced against their first time. Life skills practiced are fence climbing, scooping, crawling, balancing, friendly competition and most importantly, cheering others on 👏.
Then by special request we managed to squeeze in a round of musical hula hoops with some awesome dance moves being thrown by kids and facilitators alike 🕺 before the students entered the forge for some firey 🔥 fun.
We have had such an incredible time this week, it’s been busy, but it’s flown by. Summer camps out ✌️

Camp 4 Day 4 began with one of the kids favorite activities - stall cleaning! Then it was precision practice - they roll the dice and have to get the horse to take the exact amount of steps as the number rolled - not as easy as it sounds! We always like to teach communication and control on the ground before they get in the saddle. After a ride, we learned what horses can and can’t eat then made a treat for the horses.

The theme of Camp 4 Day 3 was….. teamwork! One of our favorite skills to work on with young kids, it requires communication, respect, leadership and work ethic.
Two teams worked to build a fort, they then gathered words based on either tack or body parts and described it or pointed to the correct body part on their horse. Kinesthetic learning at its finest! 🧠

Then in the afternoon we did some vaulting practice followed by a pony parade! 🦸 👸🏾 Never a dull moment at our barn! (Have we mentioned we have the best horses 😂

Camp 4 Day 2 began with classic barnwork - cleaning pens! 💩 we teach kids all about the importance of looking after our horses, and the steps it takes to responsibly care for our animals in order to ge to do the fun stuff - ride! 🐎.
We finished the day with the kids’ choice of some classic playground games - What’s the time Mr Wolf? 👀 🐺

Camp 4 Day 1 and what a great group we have again! Grooming horses and learning to lead minis is always on our first day list. The afternoon was taken up with one of our favorite games - Stations. Students have to guess the correct order of obstacles by leading their horse through it. This exercise requires focus, leading skills, attention and memory! Looking forward to day 2! 😎
