Bug of the Week: The Brown Widow

The Brown Widow: is a fascinating spider that can sometimes be found around homes and buildings. While they’re not aggressive, it’s still best to give them some space!

Where they live: Brown widows often build their webs in sheltered areas such as garages, sheds, woodpiles, outdoor furniture, and underneath eaves or other protected spots.

Habits: They are most active at night and use messy, three-dimensional webs to catch insects. They typically stay hidden during the day.

🏠 **Signs you might have them around your home:**

Messy, tangled webs in sheltered areas
Small, spiky egg sacs attached near the web
Spiders hiding in dark, protected areas around your home

Fun Fact: Brown widows are usually identified by their orange or yellowish hourglass marking and distinctive spiky egg sacs.

If you find spiders around your home and aren’t sure what you’re dealing with, Leupitz Pest Control can help identify the problem and keep unwanted pests under control!

Bug of the Week: Fireflies!

Who doesn’t love seeing fireflies light up the night? These amazing insects are known for their glowing abdomen, which they use to communicate with one another.

Where they live: Fireflies are commonly found in grassy areas, gardens, forests, and other places with plenty of moisture and vegetation.

Habits: Fireflies are most active at dusk and during the evening. Their flashing lights help them find and communicate with potential mates. Some firefly species also eat small insects, while others primarily feed on nectar or pollen.

Signs you might have them around your home:
-Seeing their flashing lights in your yard at night
-Finding them around tall grass, gardens, or damp areas
-More activity during warm, humid evenings

Fun Fact: Fireflies aren’t actually flies — they’re beetles! Their glow is produced through a chemical reaction in their bodies called bioluminescence.

Fireflies are generally harmless and are a fun sign of summer nights in the yard!
