Fair question. And the real answer is a lot more than "trust us."
Every lawn product has to go through the EPA's registration process before it can be sold. It isn't a quick stamp of approval. It can take years.
Here's what gets looked at:
What's in it, how it's meant to be used, how much, and when
Short-term toxicity and long-term effects on people, including cancer and reproductive risk
Wildlife, fish, plants, and endangered species
Whether it could move into groundwater or lakes through runoff, drift, or leaching
All of that data gets peer reviewed, and the product is published in the Federal Register before it ever reaches the market.
Then there's the label. Every direction on it is legally binding. It even says so: "It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling."
So when a crew says they follow the label, that's not a slogan. It's the law they work under on every lawn.
