Starting in June, we're going to be doing some more Free Sessions.

If you would like to support us please check the comments where I have posted our wish list of items that will help enable us to do this. Please share!

For the next few months (June, July, and August) the Free Sessions are going to be geared towards a specific purpose. If you cannot afford our services but you have a room in your house that could be used as a bedroom, we will clean it out for free so that it can be used as a bedroom.

Staying housed and housing each other needs to be our main priority right now. Folks who used to be able to afford their spaces alone are going to need to take on roommates. People who were not at risk before are becoming at risk of losing their housing. People who were unhoused and staying in winter shelters are going to shift to being outside homeless because winter shelters are closing. Adult children are moving back in with their parents. People will need to house their friends and family members.

So, we are offering to help you make space to do this. Maybe you are using your extra room as an office or a storage space. Maybe it has become a dumping ground for things you can't even properly access. We don't care if there's a couple things in there or if it is stacked to the ceiling with stuff. I will clean out any room in any condition, no precleaning required.

If you live in the greater Pittsburgh area and would like to schedule our help, send us a message. Let us know if you can't afford it and we will schedule it for free.

Priority will be given to people who are not at immediate risk of losing their housing (own their homes, reliably pay a mortgage, or who have less than 2000 worth of delinquent rent) so that they can offer those spaces to people who are at a more immediate risk of losing their housing or already unhoused.

Please understand that if there is a large volume of requests it may take us a while to respond. We cannot guarantee that we will see everyone that inquires during the summer months, but we will do our best.

Thanks all!

MUTUAL AID REQUEST
Please react and share!

BDC has compiled a wishlist of items needed by our disabled and low-income community members that would reasonably improve their quality of life. Getting something from this list puts it directly into the hands of someone who needs it.

The recipients are low income (most of whom are surviving on less than 900 dollars per month), receiving Disability or SSI, BIPOC, disabled, receiving free or reduced cost services from us, or just have a need they haven't been able to meet another way.

I asked these folks 'What material things would reasonably improve your circumstances/quality of life, that you can't access right now?' The items on the list are things that are not covered by their insurance, not offered by any existing organization they could find, and they haven't been able to access.

If you can snag something from this list, I would be deeply grateful. Some items are under 10 dollas, some are in the hundreds. Some folks have expressed that used items are acceptable. If you have an alternative way to access one of these items, or you have them new, it's okay to message us about it and we may be able to coordinate to get them an alternative way. It's also okay to coordinate in the comments or elsewhere so that several folks can all chip in on one big ticket item.

There are currently TWO active wishlists. One is directly on Amazon and the other is Linked below. The link below reflects what is still needed. When it has been accessed, it disappears from both lists.

Below are some blurbs from the recipients describing their needs in their own words:

"I need a new vacuum and maybe some dog food bowls. The one I have can't pick up my dogs kibble. You see how she throws it everywhere, and then I can't clean it all up with a broom [due to disability]. The kibble attracts [redacted bug issues]. I have had an exterminator come several times and I'm losing this battle. If I could just secure the food bowls somehow and actually vacuum the floor effectively this whole cycle would stop. But, I can't afford to choose this over paying my rent.'

"I need a countertop dishwasher. I used to have one, and it was helping me keep up with this [the kitchen cleaning]. I can't get my chair [wheelchair] into the kitchen and I can't stand here long enough to wash them. If I had a dishwasher, I could put my dishes in there once a day and it wouldn't be so many by the time you came back."

"I just need somewhere for my dishes to dry, like one of those over counter racks. I get paralyzed over the dishes because there's no where to put them once they are washed. My kitchen is a closet [it's small]. I think if there was a drying spot I could wash them and put them away more often. I just literally don't have 40 bux to spend on it. Most of my money goes towards my meds right now."

"I don't know if this counts, but I need new headphones. I'm sure you understand how important they are being autistic yourself. Mine only work out of one side now and it's really messing with me. I'm struggling to do any task outside my home without them. I use them to block out noise and emotionaly regulate at appointments and such. I haven't left the house in three weeks since they broke."

"I need like a magnet or something. I keep dropping nails and staples on the floor and it makes my craft area dangerous to use. I step on them and hurt myself. Or I just don't use that area of the house until you come back to clean. This is one source of income I have right now and I can't afford not to use the space."

"I really need a new air purifier. I accidentally dumped juice into my old one, it got moldy, and I had to throw it out. I can't breath, especially at night. It's effecting my health, but I don't have 100 bux to buy a new one and I don't know when I will.'

These are just a few of the asks. We will continue to add more things to this list in the coming weeks. The list will stay active until at least the new year.

Thank you for reading, reacting, and sh@ring this with your people.

When someone is not involved in the choice to adopt, they are often not materially ready for the care of that animal. Giving animals as surprise holiday gifts can put both the animal and its care taker in a dangerous position. Say NO to pets as presents unless it has been expressly discussed and planned for by the parties responsible for the animals care.

With the holidays coming, this is the time of year we see a lot of people giving up their older pets to turn around and immediately obtain a new pet. Giving up your pet because you’re busy, no longer want them, or can’t be bothered to care for them is a great way to be a responsible pet owner! (Please note the more sincere form of sarcasm, here.)

In all seriousness, shelters are full. Foster based rescues are full. Cat Cafes and lounges are full. Animal control is full. They cannot take your unwanted pet because you want a newer, younger model, without another homeless pet paying the price.

This holiday season, give your pet what they really want, to remain in your home as part of your family. Give them love and play time. Give them your full attention to genuine training and routine. Pets don’t understand that the holidays could mean new toys and treats, but they do understand what it means to be home with their humans. Give your pets what they deserve, not what is most convenient for you.

Cleaning is a self care cycle that never really ends. It can be helpful toward productivity to remember that the overall process is just that; a process. But this doesn't work for everyone! If you're the type of person who feels like a task needs to be able to be completed in order to muster the emotional energy to do it, we suggest dividing up tasks into smaller goals.

For example:
'I need to take out the trash' could be broken down something like this:

-gather the trash I can see near me into a small container
-repeat each time I am in a new area of the house
-gather the small containers near the largest bin
-combine into larger bag
-remove bag from can
-replace bag
-take trash to door
-take trash to dumpster

Each of these steps can be viewed as its own complete task, and each step can be checked off for a boost of serotonin to propel you forward towards the next goal. You can break tasks down into as many steps as you need to. There is no such thing as too small of a goal.

If you need help breaking down your cleaning tasks into easier steps, feel free to message us and check back on our page in the future for detailed strategies we want to share with you.

Image Description:

Two identical photos of a beautiful blue Pittsburgh sky, covered in mammatus cloud formations that resemble bubbles. In the upper left corner of both images is a round white logo featuring a line drawing of a spray bottle and cleaning supplies. The Logo reads; Bodydouble Cleaning. Black text has been added overtop of the images. The text reads as follows:

Executive Dysfunction

If you have executive dysfunction, you might have difficulty breaking down a large project into several manageable steps and feel unable to start. You might be unable to determine how much time or effort the task will take and become overwhelmed.

Enter the Body Double

Our staff is trained on and has access to written resources, task maps, and tips to help you break down those tasks into manageable steps, distribute tasks equitably, and help to support you in cleaning, maintenance, and organizing your home.

If you have difficulty staying focused on a task, the body double can cue you to remember what you were doing and provide encouragement or guidance to stay on track. The body double is a physical reminder of the task you are trying to complete as well as a way to boost accountability.

On the other hand, the body double can handle one task while you focus on something else entirely. They can remind you to take breaks, eat, drink, or perform some kind of self care, if you tend to hyperfocus and neglect your needs.

How we work with clients who experience Executive Dysfunction and have a desire to clean along with us will vary from client to client based on their needs.
