MUTUAL AID REQUEST
Please react and share!
BDC has compiled a wishlist of items needed by our disabled and low-income community members that would reasonably improve their quality of life. Getting something from this list puts it directly into the hands of someone who needs it.
The recipients are low income (most of whom are surviving on less than 900 dollars per month), receiving Disability or SSI, BIPOC, disabled, receiving free or reduced cost services from us, or just have a need they haven't been able to meet another way.
I asked these folks 'What material things would reasonably improve your circumstances/quality of life, that you can't access right now?' The items on the list are things that are not covered by their insurance, not offered by any existing organization they could find, and they haven't been able to access.
If you can snag something from this list, I would be deeply grateful. Some items are under 10 dollas, some are in the hundreds. Some folks have expressed that used items are acceptable. If you have an alternative way to access one of these items, or you have them new, it's okay to message us about it and we may be able to coordinate to get them an alternative way. It's also okay to coordinate in the comments or elsewhere so that several folks can all chip in on one big ticket item.
There are currently TWO active wishlists. One is directly on Amazon and the other is Linked below. The link below reflects what is still needed. When it has been accessed, it disappears from both lists.
Below are some blurbs from the recipients describing their needs in their own words:
"I need a new vacuum and maybe some dog food bowls. The one I have can't pick up my dogs kibble. You see how she throws it everywhere, and then I can't clean it all up with a broom [due to disability]. The kibble attracts [redacted bug issues]. I have had an exterminator come several times and I'm losing this battle. If I could just secure the food bowls somehow and actually vacuum the floor effectively this whole cycle would stop. But, I can't afford to choose this over paying my rent.'
"I need a countertop dishwasher. I used to have one, and it was helping me keep up with this [the kitchen cleaning]. I can't get my chair [wheelchair] into the kitchen and I can't stand here long enough to wash them. If I had a dishwasher, I could put my dishes in there once a day and it wouldn't be so many by the time you came back."
"I just need somewhere for my dishes to dry, like one of those over counter racks. I get paralyzed over the dishes because there's no where to put them once they are washed. My kitchen is a closet [it's small]. I think if there was a drying spot I could wash them and put them away more often. I just literally don't have 40 bux to spend on it. Most of my money goes towards my meds right now."
"I don't know if this counts, but I need new headphones. I'm sure you understand how important they are being autistic yourself. Mine only work out of one side now and it's really messing with me. I'm struggling to do any task outside my home without them. I use them to block out noise and emotionaly regulate at appointments and such. I haven't left the house in three weeks since they broke."
"I need like a magnet or something. I keep dropping nails and staples on the floor and it makes my craft area dangerous to use. I step on them and hurt myself. Or I just don't use that area of the house until you come back to clean. This is one source of income I have right now and I can't afford not to use the space."
"I really need a new air purifier. I accidentally dumped juice into my old one, it got moldy, and I had to throw it out. I can't breath, especially at night. It's effecting my health, but I don't have 100 bux to buy a new one and I don't know when I will.'
These are just a few of the asks. We will continue to add more things to this list in the coming weeks. The list will stay active until at least the new year.
Thank you for reading, reacting, and sh@ring this with your people.
