It is snake season in the North American Southwest, which means your chance of seeing "nope ropes" when you venture outdoors has greatly increased. But before you panic and call for help, did you know that here in Arizona, we have some snakes that are not actually dangerous and are quite beneficial to have around? Take some time to learn how to recognize the vital differences between these two highly common snakes.

The gopher snake is non-venemous and has a narrow face. It will act just like a rattle snake and shake its tail when feeling threatened, but it cannot harm you the way a rattler can. We like keeping these snakes around because they are extremely beneficial at natural rodent control; hence their name "gopher snake!" Though commonly glossy, they may look dull if they are about to shed. Facial shape is going to be your most reliable indicator for identification.

The rattlesnake will always have a larger triangular head, have dull scales, and that infamous blunt rattle on the end of its tail. Rattle snakes are also great for rodent control, but are understandably not desirable to have near your home and property. Their bite is venomous and requires immediate medical attention if you or your animals are bitten.

If you come across a snake this summer and are having trouble identifying it, send us a picture and we can help you figure out what it is and what steps you should take next!

When you hear unusual noises in your attic, it is probably best to have it checked out. Rats are definitely the most common issue in the attic, but sometimes it turns out to be something bigger.
In this case that I resolved last week the racc***s had found a smaller hole and made it bigger so they could fit. The customer didn't realize what kind of problem he had until one evening he saw a couple of racc***s looking at him from up on the roof. The 1st step was to make sure all the racc***s were out of the attic before I sealed up the hole. Once we were sure of that, I got the hole sealed up securely against racc***s and painted it with paint provided by the customer. No more racc***s in his attic now, and all cleaned up and sanitized.

🦝 This guy got himself lost in unfamiliar territory and was out of his element. Luckily the shipping facility that he had decided to hang out at got ahold of me for an urgent animal removal and relocation. Now they can continue business as usual. He should be able to make a decent life where I located him with water nearby and whatever food the other racc***s I've seen in the area find. He was quite the grunter and growler compared to other 'c***s I've handled though.

🐍Snake story today. Read the whole thing for a chuckle.
🐍I got a call from a man who said his daughter found a snake in the house and he couldn't leave work to handle it. We discussed options. He agreed to have me out when I was able to be available a short while later to do a snake inspection to remove the snake and investigate potential prevention measures.
🐍As soon as I was able to make myself available I gave him a call to let him know I was on my way. 5 minutes later I got a call back from him to apologize for wasting my time. My first thought was their daughter found someone to get it already and good on her for getting it handled. NOPE.
🐍So he goes on to tell me that one daughter decided it would be funny to scare the other sister with a fake snake!πŸ€ͺ🀣πŸ€ͺ🀣
I guess when they found out he was sending someone to remove it the joke was up. He was understandably upset for the ruckus and interruption to his work day, but we both had a good laugh too. 😁

🦨 Urgent call today!! I have my regular operating hours, but this is why I keep the business phone with me as often as possible after hours and on weekends.

🦨 A very nice family in the valley had the unpleasant experience this morning of startling a skunk who sprayed and then fled into their garage! Definitely not something you plan for. πŸ€ͺ

🦨 Luckily I was able to make myself available and get out to their home within a few hours to capture and relocate this cute little guy to someplace suitable for his prosperity and away from further possibilities of disturbing homes.

Snake removed for a customer on 31/July/2021. Watch to learn something interesting about gopher snakes.

Yet another call for for a rattlesnake underneath a house preventing workmen from working under there. This guy was a little harder to find as he had a good hiding spot and never rattled and hardly moved until I had grabbed at him. Pretty little guy with good colors and contrast.

Quite an eventful day! Besides a couple of typical rat and pigeon stops, I removed a barn owl from someone's fireplace that fell down their chimney, and removed a big rattlesnake and a big gopher snake that were under a mobile home where plumbers were trying to work.
