October did what October does in Austin.

Cricket swarms are winding down. Wolf spiders are still at peak. Wasps are getting more defensive by the week heading into first freeze. Mosquitoes are hanging on later than most people expect. And rodents are starting to think about moving indoors full-time.

November's lineup: rodent indoor migration peaks, holiday guests and food storage, Thanksgiving-week pest concerns.

If you're not on quarterly yet, this is the window. (512) 537-1475.

Paper wasp colonies hit their largest and most defensive size right before the first hard freeze. One disturbed nest can produce 15–20 defensive wasps in seconds.

Kraig's rule on wasps this time of year: don't knock it down yourself, don't spray from a ladder, don't blast it with a hose. The failure modes range from stings to a fall off a ladder.

Webb treats wasp nests as a dedicated service — the right distance, the right time of day (late evening when they're less active), and the right product.

If you've got a visible nest on an eave or soffit heading into November: (512) 537-1475.

Daddy longlegs are everywhere in Austin right now, especially on limestone walls, under eaves, and on fence corners.

They're not spiders. They're arachnids called harvestmen, with no venom, no fangs that can break human skin, and no interest in your house. They eat tiny insects and plant matter, including things you don't want (aphids, small mites).

They're actually beneficial. Our quarterly perimeter doesn't target them, and we don't recommend DIY treatments either.

If one wanders into the house, carry it outside. That's it.

The real fall spider conversation is wolf spiders, orb weavers, and the occasional recluse near garages. That's what we treat for. (512) 537-1475.

This is what the pantry shelf looks like when a mouse has been visiting. Small dark droppings, usually along the back edge of a shelf or inside a corner.

Kraig's method on rodents is the opposite of what most companies do: bait first, trap second, seal entry points LAST.

Sealing a house full of rodents inside leaves you with dead mice in your walls. Webb's method draws them out with exterior bait stations, catches what's left with traps, then returns about a month later to seal the entry points once the population is cleared.

That sequence is what makes it stay fixed. If you've been seeing droppings, (512) 537-1475.

Daytime temps in the 80s and 90s well into October mean mosquitoes stay active in Central Texas longer than most people think.

The hidden breeding ground is almost always your own yard — a forgotten bucket, a saucer under a potted plant, a wheelbarrow collecting rain, a clogged gutter corner.

It takes about a bottle cap's worth of standing water and a week for a mosquito to go from egg to biting adult.

Walk your yard this weekend. Dump anything holding water. If you want the barrier treatment on top of that: (512) 537-1475. Monthly mosquito, no annual contract.

If you've noticed more spider webs on fences, porches, and between mum pots lately — that's not your imagination.

Fall is when female orb weavers reach adult size, build their biggest webs, and lay egg sacs that overwinter and hatch next spring.

The webs catch morning dew and look beautiful. The females die before Christmas. The egg sacs stay.

If you want fewer of them next year: Webb's quarterly perimeter treats harborage areas on fences, eaves, and exterior corners. (512) 537-1475.

Wolf spiders peak in October and November as males roam looking for mates. They're ground hunters — not web builders — which means they end up on garage floors, patios, and inside through weatherstripping gaps.

They won't kill you. They will absolutely ruin your night when you flip the garage light on.

Quarterly customers stay ahead of this. Everyone else sees it, posts about it to the neighborhood group, and then calls us.

October is Kraig's busiest month. Every year.

The pattern: homeowners on quarterly service don't call during cricket season — the perimeter barrier is already there. The calls come from people who weren't on a schedule and are now watching crickets march into their garage.

That gap is the whole case for being on quarterly before the problem is visible.

Get ahead of November's indoor migration too. (512) 537-1475.

Field crickets are drawn to light. UT Austin dims its 307-foot bell tower during cricket season for this exact reason — it stops the mating-flight attractor and the swarms thin out.

Same principle, residential scale:

1. Turn off decorative landscape lighting after 10pm.

2. Switch porch lights to yellow bug bulbs (they emit a wavelength crickets don't track to).

3. Close blinds on windows that face your porch so interior light doesn't leak out.

It won't eliminate crickets, but it'll meaningfully thin the swarm. Combined with Webb's quarterly perimeter, it's the full fix.
