Essential Maintenance Tip: Lead-Acid Battery Water Levels

For owners of golf carts equipped with traditional flooded lead-acid batteries, regular water maintenance is one of the most important yet often overlooked tasks.

We recommend checking water levels every two weeks during periods of regular use, and at minimum every month during lighter use or storage. Proper electrolyte levels ensure optimal battery performance, maximum charge capacity, and significantly extended service life.

Key Guidelines:

Use only distilled water — tap water contains minerals that accelerate corrosion and reduce battery efficiency.

Check after charging (when batteries are fully charged and have cooled), as charging causes the electrolyte to expand.

Fill to the correct level — typically just covering the plates or to the marked fill line (about 1/8″ to 1/4″ above plates). Never overfill — excess water will spill out during charging due to gassing, leading to acid overflow, corrosion on terminals and trays, and potential damage to surrounding components.

Never allow batteries to run dry — exposed plates will sulfate rapidly, permanently reducing capacity and often causing irreversible damage within weeks.

Consistent attention to this simple procedure prevents premature battery failure and can add years to your battery pack’s usable life.
