HOW TO KEEP YOUR CENTIPEDE LAWN LOOKING LIKE THIS.

This is a picture of a 5 year old centipede lawn. The current owners have been in the house for a little over a year and acquired the home with this pristine centipede lawn from the original owners. It is my bet that the previous owners were "lawn people" who were very proactive about having a nice lawn. I'm sure they fed it regularly and kept it treated for pests and w**ds in addition to making sure it had excellent irrigation coverage.
However, if these current owners want to keep their lawn looking like this, they are going to have to dethatch and top dress the lawn soon to keep it from going into decline due to the thatch that has accumulated from all the attention that has been given to the lawn over the last five years. Without dethatching and top dressing, the root system of this lawn is not going to be able to support all the lush growth that has accumulated over the past five years.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SPREAD FERTILIZER ON MY LAWN?

Many times I get asked the question “What setting do I place my spreader on to apply fertilizer?“
Since fertilizer spreaders very greatly in their settings and the amount of product they distribute, the best way to apply fertilizer is like this:
1. First determine the amount of fertilizer you intend to apply to the lawn.
2. Set the spreader on one of the lower settings.
3. Go back and forth over the lawn one direction, then change directions so that your intersecting your previous lines of application by 90 degrees.
4. Keep going back over the lawn, first one direction, then the other until the fertilizer is gone.
It takes a little longer applying fertilizer this way, but it’s the best way to insure the correct amount of fertilizer gets evenly distributed over the lawn.

HOW TO GET RID OF SEDGE IN YOUR LAWN

Sedge appears as dark green tuffs of thin bladed grass. Technically, sedge is not a grass. One of the easiest ways to identify a sedge from a grass is by plucking a seed stem and rolling it between your fingers. Sedge stems are triangular instead of round and you will be able to feel that as you roll it between your fingers. Sedge invades lawns during the summer and goes away in the fall.
Because sedge is not a grass or a broad leaf w**d it requires a speciality products to kill it. Sedge Hammer and Certainty are a few products that will kill sedge in your lawn.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BE WATERING YOUR LAWN RIGHT NOW?

The Gulf Coast has recently been blessed with rain showers several times a week. Grass should not need any supplemental irrigation in addition to the rainfall we are receiving right now. I personally have had my irrigation system shut off for the last 10 days. I will keep it off as long as we’re experiencing rain at least a couple times a week.

Having the irrigation system run in addition to to the rainfall, creates a favorable environment for disease to develop in the lawn.
