Underground Leader Piping Cleaning in Old Saybrook, CT

When people think about roof drainage, they usually only think about the gutters. In reality, the gutters are only half the system.

Today we were in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, performing high-velocity water jetting on the underground roof leader piping for a large condominium complex. Over time, the system became clogged with dirt, leaves, mulch, and other debris and could no longer handle the huge volume of stormwater coming off these large roofs.

During heavy rain, that water had nowhere to go. It built up around the building’s foundation, entered through the window wells, and flooded the inside of the building.

We thoroughly cleaned the underground piping with high-velocity water jetting and restored the system to full flow. Now the rainwater coming off those roofs has a clear path away from the buildings instead of collecting around the foundations.

And this isn’t just a commercial property problem.

Some residential homes have sump pumps to help manage groundwater. Others rely heavily on underground leader piping to carry rainwater from the roof gutters away from the foundation. If that piping isn’t functioning properly, prepare for problems during a heavy rainstorm. Thousands of gallons of water can come off a roof, and if it has nowhere to drain, that water can end up around your foundation—and eventually inside your home.

Sometimes preventing a flooded building isn’t about expensive waterproofing or reconstruction. It’s simply about making sure the drainage system is clean and able to do the job it was designed to do.

Two kitchen sink clogs. Two different towns. Two different solutions.

Today’s jobs took us to Stonington, Connecticut and Groton, Connecticut, where we cleaned two kitchen sink drain lines using different equipment based on what each pipe needed.

One drain was cleaned with an old reliable power drain snake because it was the best choice for the length of the run. The other was cleaned using our high-speed pipe milling machine, which is excellent for removing heavy grease and debris that’s built up inside the pipe.

People often ask which method is better. The truth is, neither one is “better” in every situation. The key is knowing which tool will clean that particular pipe the most effectively.

One thing you’ll notice in both clips… we had the water running while we were cleaning. 😉 That wasn’t by accident. As we broke apart the grease and debris, the running water carried everything downstream instead of allowing it to settle back into the pipe. It also let us confirm, in real time, that the line was opening up and flowing properly as we worked. It’s one of those small details that makes a big difference in getting a drain cleaned thoroughly.

The right equipment, used the right way, makes all the difference. That’s why every drain is evaluated individually before we get to work.

New London CT Pipe Lining | Trenchless Sewer Line Repair

Some sewer repairs make you wonder what the previous contractor was thinking.

This homeowner was dealing with repeated sewer backups because someone had drilled a hole into the main sewer line and forced a barbed fitting into it. From what we can tell, it was likely intended to drain the retaining wall above. Unfortunately, the connection was left completely open and unsealed, allowing tree roots to invade the sewer line until the pipe eventually backed up.

Excavating wasn’t practical here—and it wasn’t the right solution anyway.

First, we removed all of the tree roots from the sewer line. Next, we used our high-speed pipe milling equipment to grind the barbed fitting perfectly flush with the inside of the pipe. Once the pipeline was properly prepared, we installed a fully structural trenchless pipe liner through the existing cleanout inside the home, permanently sealing the damaged section without excavation.

The result? A permanent sewer repair with no unnecessary digging, minimal disruption to the property, and a pipe that’s built to last.

When digging doesn’t make sense, DON’T.

Commercial Storm Drain Inspection in Mystic, CT

This large commercial shopping plaza flooded every time it rained. Water was literally bubbling up through the concrete slab and flooding the businesses inside.

We performed a sewer camera inspection and mapped the entire underground storm drainage system. The problem turned out to be simple—the outlet pipes were buried and blocked off with large boulders. With nowhere for the roof runoff to go, the underground piping built pressure until the water forced its way back into the building.

The good news? We located the buried outlet pipes, mapped the entire drainage system, and marked their locations with spray paint. All the new building owner needs to do is excavate the outlets and extend them so the stormwater can discharge freely again. About a day’s worth of excavation can solve a problem that has been causing flooding for years.

Interestingly, I was at this same property several years ago working for the previous building owner’s plumber. At the time, I identified the same issue and recommended exposing the buried outlet pipes. For whatever reason, that repair was never made, and unfortunately the building flooded again. The good news is the new owner now has a straightforward, permanent solution.

Commercial drainage systems are a different animal. They require the right equipment, experience, and the ability to diagnose problems that aren’t always obvious. While many companies shy away from commercial work, it’s exactly the type of work we love. From sewer camera inspections and underground pipe locating to commercial drain cleaning and trenchless repairs, this is what we do every day.

Sewer Line Repair Under a Porch in New London, CT

Working under a porch isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of a good time, especially in the rain.

Today’s job brought us to a home in New London that’s well over 100 years old. To access the buried sewer trap, we had to carefully remove a section of the porch skirting and pull off a panel. As far as anyone knows, this porch has never been opened since the house was built. We were probably the first people to see underneath it in over a century.

The sewer line was heavily clogged with tree roots. We were able to restore flow today, but it wasn’t easy. Our only access was through an old buried sewer trap with no cleanouts, which meant every foot of drain cleaning equipment had to be forced through the trap before we could even begin attacking the blockage.

Even after getting the water flowing again, we couldn’t completely remove the root mass because our access was so restricted. The clay sewer line is simply too compacted with roots to be properly cleaned from this location alone.

The permanent solution will require hand excavating under the porch to expose the buried sewer trap over five feet below grade. Once the trap is removed, we’ll have direct access to the pipeline so we can thoroughly clean it with our trailer-mounted high-velocity water jetter. After the roots have been completely removed, we’ll rehabilitate the remaining clay sewer with a structural pipe liner.

Getting the drain flowing today was only a temporary fix. Unfortunately, this pipeline will require much more work to prevent it from backing up again. In the end, the customer will have a like-new sewer line without having to remove the porch or unnecessarily disrupt the rest of their property.

Stay tuned for the permanent repair.

Title: Commercial Drain Cleaning Specialists in Mystic, CT

At our shop in Mystic, Connecticut, we’re getting ready for a challenging commercial drain cleaning job.

Sometimes the right tool for the job doesn’t exist, so we build it ourselves.

We’re welding up a custom set of cleaning chains designed specifically for this pipeline. Every commercial drain system is different, and off-the-shelf equipment isn’t always enough to get the pipe properly cleaned.

Taking the extra time to fabricate specialized tooling is part of doing the job the right way. It takes more effort, but that’s what it takes to thoroughly remove heavy buildup and leave the pipeline as clean as possible.

When it comes to commercial drain cleaning, experience isn’t just knowing how to run the equipment. It’s knowing when to modify it, improve it, or build something entirely new to solve the problem.

Some kitchen sink drain clogs need more than a drain snake.

On this job in Ledyard, Connecticut, we found an unusually long kitchen sink drain that ran beneath a drop ceiling and had very poor pitch. Because of the way the piping was installed, we determined that high-velocity water jetting was the best solution to thoroughly clean the line.

What is high-velocity water jetting?

Imagine using a pressure washer to clean years of dirt and grime off your deck or sidewalk. Now imagine that same concept happening inside your drain pipe. We use specialized equipment that delivers approximately 3,000 to 4,000 PSI through a jetting nozzle at the end of our hose. As you can imagine, grease and sludge buildup inside the pipeline don’t stand much of a chance.

We opened an existing cleanout in the basement, set up floor protection to protect the home, and thoroughly cleaned the entire pipeline. When we were finished, the pipe was as clean as the day it was installed.

Now the customer can get back to using their kitchen without worrying about slow drains or backups.

Underground Sewer Pipe Replacement in Old Lyme, CT | Part 2

Yesterday, we showed just how badly this sewer line had deteriorated. Today, we’re showing how we solved the problem.

Instead of tearing apart the customer’s outside shower or disturbing the deck above it, we carefully tunneled underneath the shower to preserve the entire structure. We then removed all of the failed cast-iron sewer piping and installed new Schedule 40 PVC from inside the home, through the foundation, underneath the outside shower, and directly into the septic tank.

A lot of people will ask, “Why didn’t you just line the pipe?”

We tried.

Unfortunately, the cast-iron pipe was so deteriorated that it couldn’t survive the cleaning process required before installing a structural pipe liner. We refuse to compromise quality just to force a trenchless solution where it isn’t appropriate.

Instead, we adapted our approach while still honoring the commitment we made to our customer. We eliminated every bit of the failed cast iron without disturbing the outside shower or the deck above it.

As the owner of Superior Sewer & Drain Service, I believe your word matters. If I tell a customer we’re going to do everything possible to protect their property, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Sometimes the repair plan changes once we uncover what’s underground, but our commitment to doing the job right and keeping our promises never does.
