Here is something most homeowners never think about. Spiders are attracted to the mercaptan odorant added to natural gas. So during the months your fireplace sits idle, they crawl into the pilot assembly, the burner ports, and the gas orifices and build webs inside the gas components. Come November, you press the ignition and the unit will not light, or the flame is weak and uneven. The cause is a tiny web blocking the gas flow. Pollen buildup, wasp nests in the vent termination, and mud daubers are all common culprits too in the Nashville and Murfreesboro area. We covered all of this in our new troubleshooting guide.
